The two squads were scoreless through over 84 minutes of action in a tightly defended game. In the 14th minute of overtime, The Wildcats were able to capitalize off of a penalty corner. Isabel Flens scored her team-leading eight goal of the season with assists from Charlotte Martin and Lisa McCarthy, who inserted the corner.
"I am proud of how the team competed today," head coach Meredith Long said. "We executed our defensive game plan effectively but could not generate the outcomes we needed on the attacking end. The team really took a lot from this match and they are eager to get back on the field Sunday against Michigan."
The Scarlet Knights were held off the score sheet while managing two shots on goal, both coming from Katie Champion (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.). Northwestern put five shots on goal in 17 shot attempts, with goalkeeper Shevaun Hayes (Melbourne, Australia) turning three shots aside. The Scarlet Knights also got a defensive save from Elyse Broderick (Manahawkin, N.J.).
Rutgers concludes the road trip Sunday in Ann Arbor, Mich. as they face the Michigan Wolverines at 1 p.m.
