Rutgers Game Notes
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - After capturing a win over No. 4 Wisconsin, the highest-ranked opponent ever defeated in program history, Rutgers (10-7, 2-2) returns to the road to meet nationally-ranked Maryland (15-2, 3-1) in College Park. Both programs are in their initial seasons as Big Ten Conference members. The Terps are No. 11 in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll and No. 14 in the AP poll. The Scarlet Knights will be working to earn back-to-back wins over nationally-ranked opponents for the third time in school history. RU's last win over a ranked foe on the road was a 77-64 victory at No. 13 Pittsburgh on Jan. 26, 2008. UM has been ranked as high as No. 9 (coaches) this season. The Scarlet Knights play three of their next four Big Ten contests away from the RAC.
Wednesday evening's game will be televised live nationally on BTN with Joe Davis calling the action and Dan Bonner providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The game will mark the seventh meeting on the collegiate hardwood between Rutgers and Maryland dating back to 1940 with the series tied 3-3. The Scarlet Knights are 1-1 on the UM's home floor. The last two meeting occurred at neutral sites, when Eddie Jordan was a Rutgers assistant under Bob Wenzel. UM won 86-81 in the MSG Holiday Festival on Dec. 27, 1990, before RU captured the last meeting, 95-79, at the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Tucson on Dec. 28, 1991.
Rutgers is coming off a thrilling, 67-62, victory over the Badgers Sunday evening at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights overcame a 13-point second half deficit by shooting 66.7 percent (16-of-24) after the break. The senior trio of Myles Mack, Kadeem Jack and Malick Kone were instrumental in the win. Mack scored 21 points in 39 minutes, Jack was 8-of-13 to post 20 points and Kone shot 3-of-3 while playing exceptional defense in a season-high 22 minutes. Rutgers out-scored the Badgers 34-26 in the paint and scored 14 of the contest's final 23 points.
Maryland, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Mark Turgeon, bounced back from a loss earlier in the week to defeat Purdue, 69-60, on Saturday. Junior forward Jake Layman scored 14 points for the Terrapins, who had four players score in double figures. In its first visit to Mackey Arena, Maryland limited the Boilermakers to 36.8 shooting (21 of 57). Maryland leads the Big Ten in defensive rebounds, posting 28.1 per game.
