PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (10-9, 2-4) looks to improve to 3-1 at home in Big Ten play when it welcomes Michigan (11-7, 4-2) to the RAC for a 6:30 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday. RU is seeking a return to the win column after a pair of hard-fought league road losses, while UM will be working to earn its fourth victory in five games. The Scarlet Knights enter the game with an ESPN Daily RPI (Jan. 18) of 70 and with their strength of schedule ranked 12th nationally. The Wolverines are 77th in the ESPN Daily RPI, with their schedule rated 37th. World-renowned performance painter David Garibaldi will do a live "Rhythm and Hue" show at halftime.
Tuesday evening's game will be televised live nationally on BTN with Joe Davis calling the action and Dan Bonner providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick, as well as on Sirius 93 and XM 195 Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The game will mark the sixth meeting on the collegiate hardwood between Rutgers and Michigan dating back to 1933 with the Wolverines holding a 5-0 advantage. RU hosted UM on campus once before in the initial meeting, a 32-22 loss during the 1933-34 season. Rutgers also suffered a 97-69 regular season loss to No. 20 Michigan at Meadowlands Arena on Dec. 21, 1983. The Wolverines came out ahead in a pair of significant post-season meetings. No. 9 UM defeated No. 4 RU, 86-70, in the 1976 NCAA Final Four at the Spectrum in Philadelphia to provide the Scarlet Knights their first loss of the season after 31 victories with Eddie Jordan serving as point guard. Michigan also downed Rutgers in the last meeting, a 62-55 decision in the 2004 NIT Final at Madison Square Garden.
Despite a season-high 26 points and eight assists from senior guard Myles Mack and 19 points from senior forward Kadeem Jack, Rutgers fell at Minnesota, 89-80, on Saturday afternoon. The Scarlet Knights shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) and established a 39-28 advantage on the boards. Minnesota did damage from long range, however, as the Gophers made 10 three-pointers, while also forcing 19 RU turnovers. As a result, the home squad benefitted from a 26-6 discrepancy in points-off-turnovers. Sophomore forward Junior Etou added 10 rebounds and nine points for RU.
Michigan, under the leadership of eighth-year head coach John Beilein, has been ranked as high as No. 17/16 this season. UM freshman Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman hit a three-pointer with one minute left and Northwestern missed a game-tying shot at the buzzer as Michigan captured a 56-54 home win over the Wildcats on Saturday night. Junior Caris LeVert posted 18 points, six rebounds and seven assists, but injured his left foot and will miss the remainder of the season. He was leading UM in scoring (14.9), rebounds (4.9), assists (3.7), steals (1.7) and minutes (35.8).
