Rutgers Game Notes
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (10-10, 2-5) will be working to sweep the regular season series with Penn State (12-7, 0-6), when it travels to University Park for a 12 noon tip-off at the Bryce Jordan Center on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights will seek a return to the win column after a trio of hard-fought, single-digit losses to league foes. The Nittany Lions will be seeking their first Big Ten win after six defeats, including five straight by single digits. RU is presently No. 83 in the ESPN Daily RPI with its strength of schedule rated 14th nationally, while PSU is No. 97 with its schedule tabbed 149.
Saturday afternoon's game will be televised live nationally on ESPNU with Clay Matvick calling the action and Sean Harrington providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The game will mark the 68th meeting on the collegiate hardwood between RU and PSU, with the Nittany Lions holding a 37-30 advantage in victories. RU is 8-24 all-time at PSU, but has won the last three meetings, including a 76-71 NIT decision on March 14, 2006. Quincy Douby shot 11-of-19 and 8-of-14 from behind the arc to score 32 points in that contest. The Scarlet Knights and Nittany Lions were both members of the Atlantic 10 Conference from 1976-79 and from 1982-1991. Rutgers head coach Eddie Jordan was 2-0 versus the Nittany Lions as a player "On the Banks," competing in an 81-63 road win as a freshman and an 89-72 home win as a senior. As an assistant coach at Rutgers (1984-85, 1988-92), the Scarlet Knights were 7-3 with Jordan on staff and won the 1989 A-10 title against PSU, 70-66, at the RAC under Bob Wenzel.
Earlier this season on Jan. 3, RU earned its initial Big Ten win with in a 50-46 win over Penn State at the RAC. Kadeem Jack had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, as Rutgers limited the visitors to just 29 percent (15-of-52) shooting.
Despite double-digit scoring efforts from Myles Mack and Jack, Rutgers dropped a 54-50 home decision to Michigan on Tuesday night. Mack led all scorers with 15 points, while also securing a team-high eight rebounds. Jack contributed 13 points and six boards. RU led by as many as six points in the contest that featured six ties and 12 lead changes.
Penn State, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Pat Chambers, suffered a 66-60 loss at Michigan State on Wednesday evening despite 27 points from senior guard D.J. Newbill, who ranks fourth nationally in scoring (21.9). The Spartans won the battle on the boards, 39-26, established a 32-16 advantage in points in the paint. The Nittany Lions tied a school record with 12 non-conference wins.
