Rutgers Game Notes
PISCATAWAY, N.J. -Rutgers (10-12, 2-7) returns to the rugged road of the Big Ten when it travels to Bloomington to meet nationally-ranked Indiana (15-6, 5-3) in a 3:15 p.m. tip-off on Saturday at 17,472-seat Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers are ranked No. 22 in the AP poll and No. 21 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. It will mark the first of back-to-back road games for the Scarlet Knights. RU is seeking a return to the win column and its initial league victory away from the RAC, while Indiana is looking to rebounds from a pair of Big Ten losses on the road.
The Scarlet Knights, with their schedule currently rated No. 13 nationally in the ESPN Daily RPI, will be working on less than a two-day turnaround. RU's last game versus Michigan State was postponed two days due to weather conditions.
Saturday afternoon's game will be televised live nationally on BTN with Kevin Kugler calling the action and Stephen Bardo providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The contest will mark the second meeting on the collegiate hardwood between RU and IU, with the Hoosiers winning the prior match-up, 55-50, on Dec. 27, 1980 at the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. Clarence Tillman had 15 points and Kelvin Troy contributed 13 in the loss to then No. 15 Indiana.
Senior forward Kadeem Jack scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but it was not enough, as Rutgers dropped a 71-51 decision to Michigan State on Thursday evening at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights had nine steals and forced 17 Spartan turnovers in their initial meeting as conference opponents. MSU utilized a 43-28 rebounding advantage and shot 51 percent (27-for-53) to earn the win. Rutgers struggled to find it shot, depositing 29.1 percent (16-of-55) of its field goal attempts.
Indiana, under the leadership of seventh-year head coach Tom Crean, fell 83-67 at Purdue on Wednesday evening despite 21 points from junior Kevin Yogi Ferrell. The Boilermakers led for the entirety, shooting 58.7 percent (27-of-46) and establishing a 31-14 advantage in bench points. Ferrell averages 16.2 points for the Hoosiers, who are paced in the scoring column by freshman guard James Blackmon, Jr., who posts 16.3 points-per-game. The Hoosiers rank 12th nationally in scoring offense (80.7) and 16th in three-point field goal percentage (40.2).
