PISCATAWAY, N.J. - On the heels of its first Big Ten Conference victory, Rutgers (9-6, 1-1) takes flight for its initial league road contest when it travels to the Cornhusker State to meet Nebraska (8-6, 0-2) in a 9 p.m. (8 p.m. local) tip-off at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Thursday (Jan. 8). The venue opened last season and has a seating capacity for basketball of 14,970. The Cornhuskers have been ranked as high as No. 21 nationally this season.
Thursday evening's game will be televised live nationally on ESPNU with Adam Amin calling the action and Craig Robinson providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The game will mark the fourth meeting on the collegiate hardwood between Rutgers and Nebraska with the Scarlet Knights holding a 2-1 advantage in victories. RU is 0-1 on the Cornhuskers home floor after Nebraska won the last meeting, 63-51, at the Bob Devaney Center on Dec. 9, 2007. The Scarlet Knights defeated Nebraska, 75-73, at the RAC on Dec. 2, 2006. The first meeting occurred on Nov. 28, 1999 at the USBWA Hoops 6 Quill Classic in St. Charles, Mo., and resulted in an 81-62 RU win.
Thanks to a strong defensive effort and a double-double from senior forward Kadeem Jack, Rutgers defeated Penn State, 50-46, Saturday night at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights, who never trailed in the contest, held the Nittany Lions to just 29 percent (15-of-52) shooting, the lowest percentage for PSU since the 2012-13 season. Up 47-46 with 28.1 seconds remaining, senior guard Myles Mack was forced to the free throw line, converting both chances to secure victory. Jack finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season and ninth of his career. Mack complimented Jack with 10 points and added seven rebounds. Rutgers out-rebounded PSU, 44-36, with four Scarlet Knights securing seven or more boards.
The Rutgers defense has steadily improved and currently ranks 38th nationally in blocks (5.1), 52nd in scoring defense (60.2), 60th in field goal percentage defense (38.9) and 67th in three-point field goal percentage defense (30.2).
Nebraska, under the direction of third-year head coach Tim Miles, suffered 70-59 loss at Iowa on Monday evening despite a game-high 25 points from junior forward Shavon Shields. Junior guard Terran Petteway joined Shields in double figures with 11 points and six rebounds despite battling through a shin bruise for most of the contest. Nebraska out-shot the Hawkeyes and established a 34-22 advantage in the paint, but Iowa benefitted from 31 points (31-of-38) at the charity stripe.
