PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The No. 21 Rutgers men's soccer team closed out its regular season home schedule with its seventh-straight victory and seventh shutout of the year in a 1-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha.
Senior Mitchell Taintor (Storrs, Conn.) scored the game's lone goal in the 39th minute. Sophomore Brandon Tetro (Freehold, N.J.) sent a pass from the right sideline to Taintor along the end line. Taintor dribbled into the box and fired into the far upper corner for his third goal of the season.
Rutgers ended the game outshooting the Mavericks, 7-5, with junior David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) collecting three saves in the victory.
Tetro had RU's other attempt on net. The sophomore Scarlet Knight deflected a header by Drew Morgan (Atlanta, Ga.) off a corner kick, but Nebraska-Omaha's Jesus Perez was at the goal line to head the ball away.
Senior JP Correa (Montville, N.J.), in his first start since the Scarlet Knights' contest at Michigan on Oct. 10, had two early shots go wide right of the Maverick goal. Freshman Brian Hawkins (Chesterfield, N.J.), meanwhile, took a deflection off a Niel Guzman (Bridgewater, N.J.) cross above the crossbar early in the second half.
The Mavericks had two chances midway through the second stanza. Emir Alihodzic tried to find the gap at the right post in the 69th minute, but Greczek was there to make his third and final stop of the afternoon. Minutes later, Fazlo Alihodzic beat the Scarlet Knight defense and raced into the box, but saw his shot go wide right to keep Nebraska-Omaha scoreless.
"They are an NCAA caliber team and knew it was going to be a tough match today," said head coach Dan Donigan. "The second half we sat on a 1-0 lead and did a good enough job to get the result. It was an aggressive second half, but kids are trying to compete and win. Again, a very tough match-up and I give (Omaha) a lot of credit. The results are here. These players are very capable and we've put it all together this year. I'm more happy for the players than anybody else."
The win improved the Scarlet Knights to 11-4-1 overall as they head into their final game of the regular season on Wednesday night against Maryland for a possible chance at the Big Ten regular season title.
Nebraska-Omaha had a three-game unbeaten streak snapped and dropped to 8-5-3 overall.
