The match began as a back-and-fourth battle as the score was found tied on seven occasions. With the count at 8-8, Indiana generated an edge to take the largest lead for either side at 11-8. Rutgers kept the margin within three, coming as close as one at 14-13. Although a kill from senior Megan Stephenson (Burbank, Calif.) brought the deficit to 16-14, it is as close as the Scarlet Knights would come. The Hoosiers jumped to a 23-14 lead en route to claiming the first set, 25-16.
Similar to the first set, Rutgers and Indiana went wire-to-wire to begin the set two. However, this time around the Scarlet Knights were able to maintain the advantage after a service ace from senior Ronnie Komisarek (San Manteo, Calif.) put RU in front 6-5. Rutgers maintained its lead, until Indiana found a 4-0 run to move in front 12-11. The Hoosiers would go on to lead by as many as five points, but the Scarlet Knights diminished the margin on a kill from sophomore Meme Fletcher (Overland Park, Kan.), capping a 3-0 burst for RU to bring its deficit to 20-17. A kill by junior Mikaela Matthews (San Diego, Calif.) followed by a Sudbury service ace set the count at 22-19. Despite two Hoosier errors across the next three serves, RU was unable to keep the momentum rolling, falling by the slim margin of 25-21 in the second set.
An even battle ensued throughout the entirety of the third set as the score was found tied 17 times with five lead changes. Although a service ace from Sudbury would hand the Scarlet Knights a 6-4 lead, the Hoosiers kept the count balanced on the scoreboard. A kill from Cloyd followed by an IU error put RU back in the lead at 9-8, as RU held at least a one-point edge. After a solo block from Frazier gave RU the lead at 12-10, the Hoosiers generated four unanswered points to overtake control at 14-12. Rutgers responded by tying the count at 14-14 on a kill from junior Micaela Anderson (La Canada, Calif.).
From that point on, the score would be tied on six occasions with a kill from Sudbury setting the count at 21-21. Indiana found the energy to pull out a 24-21 lead, but a kill from Frazier and a Hoosier error brought the margin to one, 24-23.
