PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (4-7) hosts its second straight Garden State foe when it welcomes Fairleigh Dickinson (4-6) on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The RAC and Stratis Arena are separated by an approximate 42-mile drive. The Knights are one of four Garden State foes on the Scarlet Knights' schedule. It's "Dollar Dog" night at the truncated pyramid, as hot dogs can be purchased for $1.00. For Rutgers students, the "Pay Your Tuition" contest continues, with the prize currently at $23,000.
Wednesday evening's game will be streamed live on the web via BTN Plus with Lou Brogno calling the action and Dick Lloyd providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick, as well as on Sirius 157. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
Rutgers and FDU have played 12 times on the collegiate hardwood dating back to 1981, with the Scarlet Knights holding a 10-2 advantage. RU is 9-2 all-time at home versus the Knights. Last season, Bishop Daniels shot 7-of-11 and scored 18 points in a 61-44 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson at the RAC. RU out-rebounded FDU 49-30 and limited the visitors to 30 percent (18-of-60) shooting.
Freshman point guard Corey Sanders scored 16 points with four assists, but Rutgers struggled from the field in a 73-67 home loss to Monmouth Sunday afternoon. With three key frontcourt contributors sidelined by injury, the Scarlet Knights battled before 6,637 fans in the hard-fought defeat. Sophomore guard Mike Williams and Daniels joined Sanders in double figures with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Daniels was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line, while Sanders deposited 9-of-10. The guard trio comprised 64 percent of RU's scoring. Senior center Greg Lewis and sophomore forward D.J. Foreman, the only active frontcourt players, responded to the challenge by posting career-highs on the boards. Foreman had 11 rebounds in 31 minutes, while Lewis had 10 in 36.
Sanders leads Big Ten Conference freshmen in scoring (12.7) and steals (1.7).
Fairleigh Dickinson, under the direction of third-year head coach Greg Herenda, captured a 69-68 home win over Towson on Friday. Sophomore guard Marques Townes cut to the basket and banked in a layup with 5.5 seconds remaining to give the FDU the comeback victory. The Knights trailed 67-61 with 2:21 left to play, but erased the six point deficit with an 8-1 run to close the game. Sophomore forward Earl Potts, Jr. leads the team in scoring with a 15.6 average, while sophomore guard Darian Anderson contributes 14.3 points-per-game. The Knights rank 14th nationally in steals (9.3), as Anderson is 13th in the country with 2.6 thefts per contest.
