Rutgers Game Notes
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (10-16, 2-11) returns to the rugged road of the Big Ten when it travels to Iowa City to meet Iowa (15-10, 6-6) in a 8 p.m. (ET) tip-off on Thursday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. RU is seeking a return to the win column, while the Hawkeyes are looking to bounce back from consecutive defeats. The Scarlet Knights' schedule is currently rated No. 15 nationally in the ESPN Daily RPI. Iowa is currently No. 55 overall in the NCAA RPI.
Thursday's game will be televised live nationally on ESPNU with Adam Amin calling the action and Craig Robinson providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The contest will mark just the second match-up on the collegiate hardwood between RU and Iowa, with the No. 14 Hawkeyes capturing an 87-73 victory on March 17, 1989 in an NCAA Tournament opening round match-up in Providence, Rhode Island. Tom Savage scored 26 points in loss, which followed an Atlantic 10 title for the Scarlet Knights. Eddie Jordan and current television analyst Jeff Van Gundy were assistant coaches on the Rutgers staff under Bob Wenzel.
Despite 16 points and eight rebounds from senior forward Kadeem Jack, Rutgers fell, 61-51, to Purdue on Thursday (Feb. 12) night at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights forced 12 Boilermaker turnovers and blocked four shots in the loss. RU played impressive defense, limiting Purdue to 40 percent (21-of-52) shooting from the field. But the Scarlet Knights struggled to find their shot, making 33 percent (18-of-54) of their field goal attempts. Jack and sophomore forward Junior Etou both grabbed eight rebounds, as RU established a 42-35 advantage on the boards.
Iowa, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Fran McCaffery, suffered a 66-61 overtime loss at Northwestern on Sunday. Junior forward Jarrod Uthoff scored 25 points and hit an off-balance three-pointer to force overtime. Senior forward Aaron White grabbed 13 rebounds, but was 1-of-12 from the field. White, who ranks 14th nationally free throws made (140), paces the team with a 14.6 scoring average, while Uthoff contributes 12.2 points-per-game. The Hawkeyes won four of their first five conference games, but have dropped five of their last seven.
