FRESNO, CALIF. (Mar. 1, 2015) - Despite a seventh inning rally, the Rutgers softball team fell to Oregon State, 8-3, in its finale at the Fresno State Louisville Slugger Bash on Sunday morning.
RU moves to an overall record of 4-5 and ends the tournament with a record of 2-2. OSU improves to a mark of 16-5 on the season.
Senior outfielder Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) went 2-for-3 to lead the Scarlet Knights, including one run, one walk and one putout. Freshman Sierra Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) went 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter for RU, recording her first career double.
After drawing a walk, Bates advanced to third via a wild pitch and a passed ball. Junior Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) came up to bat, blasting a single to center field to bring Bates home. RU ended the top of the first up, 1-0.
Due to two Rutgers miscues, Oregon State brought in a run to tie the game, 1-1, at the bottom of the first. Senior Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) and the defense would strand the leading run to end the inning.
Sophomore Bridget Carr (Peaquannock, N.J.) registered a lead-off single to open the second inning. After advancing to third on an OSU error, Carr hussled home on a fielder's choice and nearly made it before being tagged out at the plate.
The Beavers capitalized on two hits in the bottom of the third to take the lead, 2-1. Landrith struck out the final batter to keep it a one-run game. OSU would go on to extend its lead to 5-1 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Junior Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) entered the circle for RU forcing a putout of the final batter to end the Beavers' spark.
In the top of the fifth, junior Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) recorded a base hit and shortly after stole second base in an attempt to get the RU offense going. However, the Scarlet Knights closed the inning with no runs.
A home run from Sammi Norland scored two runs to move the Beavers in front, 7-1, at the bottom of the fifth. OSU would register another run in the bottom of the sixth to move ahead 8-1.
Entering the seventh Sierra Maddox entered to pinch hit for RU, recording her first career double and eventually advancing to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.) then recorded a double of her own to score Maddox. Up next, senior Chandler Howard (North Wilmington, Del.) reached on a fielding error as Todd scored. Bates came up to bat recording a single, however, the rally would end there as the game ended with a final score of 8-3.
Rutgers returns to action at the Lobo Classic hosted by New Mexico from March 6-8. The tournament features host New Mexico and CSU-Bakersfield.
