Bates, Hall Homer in Loss to ISU
Mar 15 | Softball
CLEARWATER, FLA. (MARCH 15, 2015) - Despite two home runs from senior Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) and freshman Rebecca Hall (Fairfax, Va.), the Rutgers softball team was edged, 5-4, in extra innings against Iowa State on Sunday morning at the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament.
Rutgers moves to an overall record of 10-7, while finishing the weekend with a mark of 4-1. Iowa State improves to a mark of 16-9.
For the second consecutive game, Bates registered a two-run home run in her first at bat to give RU a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After junior Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) was hit by a pitch, she then reached second on a wild pitch. Hall capitalized on the momentum, registering an RBI single to bring Whitley in. The Scarlet Knights ended the first inning with a 3-0 lead.
Iowa State would record a two-run homer of its own from Lexi Slater to make it a one-run game heading into the second inning.
With the score at 3-2 and the tying run on base, senior Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) sent the final Cyclone hitter down swinging to exit the second inning unharmed.
ISU evened the score, 3-3, in the bottom of the third via an RBI single from Maddie Reese. However, with two outs already on the board, Landrith and the defense retired the final batter at the plate to strand the leading runs on base.
In the top of the sixth inning, Hall connected her second collegiate home run to return the lead to RU. With a 4-3 advantage, Landrith and the defense sat down three straight batters at the plate to end the inning.
The Cyclones would go on the tie the score for the second time in the bottom of the seventh. However, the Scarlet Knight defense recorded the last out to strand two runners on base and to send the game into extra innings.
Ultimately, Cyclone Nychole Antillon sent Slater home with an RBI single in the second half of the eighth for the game-winning run.
Up next, Rutgers hits the road for its inaugural Big Ten series at Indiana from March 20-22.
