PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (10-19, 2-14) returns home to host No. 10/9 Maryland (24-5, 12-4) in a 7 p.m. tip off on Tuesday night in the Scarlet Knights' home finale. Prior to tip-off, seniors Myles Mack, Kadeem Jack, Malick Kone and Stephen Zurich, along with the graduating student managers, will be recognized in a pre-game ceremony. RU is seeking a return to the win column, while Maryland is pursuing its sixth consecutive victory. The Scarlet Knights' schedule is currently rated No. 15 nationally in the ESPN Daily RPI. Maryland is currently No. 10 overall in the NCAA RPI.
Mack and Jack are both two-time team captains and All-MET selections. Mack is a fixture in the Rutgers record books, he's currently eighth all-time in scoring (1,629), second in steals (206), third in free throw percentage (.861), fourth in assists (415) and three-point field goals (234), eighth in free throws made (335) and 10th in three-point field goal percentage (.370). Jack is one 41 members of 1,000-point club, is a two-time all-academic selection and is 13th in career blocks (96). Kone has played in 96 games and has posted 257 points and 206 rebounds. Zurich has played 18 career games. All four will earn degrees in May. Also being recognized are graduating senior managers Shane Hughes, JK Schneiderman and Edwin Burgos.
The game will be televised live nationally on BTN with Kevin Kugler calling the action and Stephen Bardo providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick, as well as on Sirius 93 and XM 195. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Dick Lloyd will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The game will mark the eighth meeting on the collegiate hardwood between Rutgers and Maryland dating back to 1940 with the Terrapins holding a 4-3 edge. The Scarlet Knights are 1-1 on their home floor versus UM, defeating the Terps in the initial meeting on Jan. 4, 1940, 51-39, before dropping a 61-55 decision on Jan. 12, 1952, both at the College Avenue Gymnasium. Maryland has won two straight in the series, including a 73-65 battle at the XFINITY Center on Jan. 14. Mack scored 19 points, while freshman guard Mike Williams and junior guard Bishop Daniels both contributed 12. RU shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55), while limiting the Terrapins to a 34.4 percent (21-of-61) field goal percentage. The home squad benefitted from 11 three-pointers, however, and a 46-33 advantage on the glass.
Rutgers had five players score in double figures, led by 18 points from Jack - who became the 41st player in RU history to reach 1,000 points for his career - in a hard-fought, 92-85 loss at Purdue on Thursday evening. Daniels added 17 points and freshman forward D.J. Foreman set a new career high with 15, but the Scarlet Knights' late comeback fell just short. Mack (15) and Williams (10) also scored double figures for Rutgers, which posted a season-high 85 points. The Scarlet Knights outscored the Boilermakers 55-46 in the second half.
Maryland, under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Mark Turgeon, defeated Michigan 66-56 at home on Saturday to complete an undefeated season at home in the Big Ten. Freshman guard Melo Trimble scored 19 points in a gritty defensive battle. Maryland never trailed over the final 20 minutes. Trimble leads the Terrapins in scoring (16.2), while senior Dez Wells contributes 15.0 points-per-game and junior Jake Layman 13.2.
