Lehigh Thwarts WLAX Comeback

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Rutgers women's lacrosse team outshot the opposition and controlled on draw controls, but fell, 10-8, to Lehigh Tuesday evening at High Point Solutions Stadium.

The Scarlet Knights bested the Mountain Hawks in shots, 22-15, and on the draw, 12-7, but could not overcome Lehigh's 5-for-6 output in 8-meter attempts on the night.

Junior attacker Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.Y.) led Rutgers with a hat trick, scoring her final goal of the game with 41 seconds remaining to cut the Mountain Hawk lead to 10-8.

With RU needing the following draw control and a quick score, Lehigh came out of the scramble with the ball and clocked it for the 10-8 final.

Redshirt senior midfielder Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) and sophomore midfielder Kristina Dunphey (Hillsborough, N.J.) notched two goals apiece against Lehigh. Sbrilli's first score of the game was the 100th of her career.

Redshirt senior Hollie DiMuro (West Babylon, N.Y.) had a strong day defensively with two ground balls, two caused turnovers and four draw controls. Also hauling in four draw controls was sophomore midfielder Macy Scott (Toms River, N.J.).

Lehigh's Carli Sukonik led the Mountain Hawks with four goals.

RU travels to No. 1/1 Maryland on Saturday at noon to face the defending champion Terrapins. The game will be streamed live online via BTN Plus.

Game Notes

  • Sbrilli scored two goals Tuesday against Lehigh to go over the century mark for her career at Rutgers.
  • Rookie Amanda Casten (Brick, N.J.) made her eighth-straight start.
  • Kolodnyhas scored in all but one game this season. The hat trick was her third of the year.
  • DiMuro was a force defensively against the Mountain Hawks. She led Rutgers with two ground balls and two caused turnovers and tied for the team lead with four draw controls.
  • DiMuro's two caused turnovers pushed her ahead of Elizabeth Chambers (1997-2000) and Catherine Seals (2002-05) and into fourth place all-time with 77 for her career. She can tie Robin Erthal (1996-99) for third place with four more caused turnovers.
  • Senior Melissa Arthur (Marlton, N.J.)recorded her team-leading 12th assist Tuesday. The helper was her first since posting four at UConn on March 7.
  • With 12 draw controls, RU recorded its highest total since winning 19 on March 14 at James Madison.
