STONY BROOK, N.Y. (April 1, 2015) -- Rutgers softball sweptStony Brook on Wednesday afternoon in a nonconference doubleheader at University Field. The Scarlet Knights claimed a 7-5 victory in the first game, followed by a 1-0 shutout in the next.
RU holds an overall record of 16-5, in addition to a 4-2 mark in conference play. Stony Brook falls to 9-10 overall on the season.
GAME ONE
Behind three home runs, Rutgers topped Stony Brook, 7-5, in the opening game. Senior outfielder Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) led the team with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including a career-high two homers and four runs in the win. Junior infielder Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) crushed the firsthome run of her career and tied her season-high with 3 RBI.
In her first at bat, Bates homered to left field to give RU an early 1-0 lead.
Stony Brook's Bria Green then added a home run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
Following two scoreless innings from either side, RU reclaimed the lead once again behind the bat of Bates. In her second trip to the box, Bates sent another long ball to the same spot as the first, giving the Scarlet Knights a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fourth.
Stony Brook countered with its second home run from Chelsea Evans, but junior Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) struck out the final batter to end the inning with the score balanced at 2-2.
Both teams added one run apiece in the fourth inning to keep the game even, 3-3, until RU found a burst in the top of the fifth.
After Bates drew a walk, Whitley notched a double deep into left fiel as Bates swiftly rounded the bases to slide safely into home, capturing the lead, 4-3. An RBI double from Elizabeth Adams (Crystal Lake, Ill.) brought in two runs to extend the advantage to 5-3 at the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the seventh, Whitley cushioned the edge with a two-run homer. The Seawolves would add on two runs via a two-run home run of their own from Green, but it was not enough to surpass the Scarlet Knights.
Maddox (5-3) registered the win, tossing a complete game.
GAME TWO
Rutgers grabbed its third shutout of the season behind the arm of sophomore Shayla Sweeney (Barrington, N.J.). Sweeney pitched a complete game, delivering a career-high nine strikeouts and allowing only three hits across seven innings of work.
Junior Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) led off the game with a base hit, however, the Scarlet Knights were unable to get the offense going in the opening inning.
Despite letting up a walk and a hit, Sweeney settled in and struck out three Stony Brook hitters in a row to close the first.
An early pitcher's duel developed as neither side was able to get anything across in the first two innings of play.
As the Rutgers offense struggled to get things rolling, Sweeney's arm backed up the Scarlet Knights. Beginning with the last out in the bottom of the third, Sweeney retired seven consecutive batters at the plate through the fifth inning to keep the Seawolves scoreless.
RU found a burst in the top of the sixth as back-to-back hits put runners on first and third. Sophomore Bridget Carr (Pequannock, N.J.) followed by bringing in freshman Rebecca Hall (Fairfax, Va.) to put RU on the board.
With RU up, 1-0, Sweeney maintained control in the circle, holding the Seawolves scoreless for the two remaining frames to claim the win. Sweeney improves to a record of 3-1 on the year with a total of three complete games pitched.
