RU'S LAST TIME OUT
Rutgers (24-14, 8-7 Big Ten) picked up three straight wins in midweek matchups before faltering in a conference series at Ohio State. It marked only the second Big Ten series loss for the Scarlet Knights. RU had won three consecutive series over Indiana, Purdue and Michigan State before facing its first series loss to No. 4 Michigan.
Senior Jackie Bates (Lincroft, N.J.) registered a total of six home runs across last week's contests en route to capturing the Rutgers single-season record with 16 homers. Bates is tied for the top spot on the all-time career list with 34 collegiate long balls. The senior centerfielder leads the team with a .379 batting average and ranks second in the Big Ten with an .895 slugging percentage.
Also leading RU at the plate is junior Jordan Whitley (Clayton, Del.) with a .376 clip, along with 47 hits, 11 doubles and 22 RBIs.
In the circle, junior Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) recorded the lone victory over OSU, tossing four scoreless innings in the 3-2 win over the Buckeyes. Senior Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) entered in the final inning of that contest, sending the final batter down swinging to deny the leading runs and seal the win for RU. It marked Landrith's first save of the season and sixth of her career, a total that ranks second in the record books.
SCOUTING MARYLAND
Maryland (26-19, 8-7 Big Ten) registered a sweep of Penn State over the weekend. A week prior, the Terps suffered three straight losses to Illinois. UMD has won three conference series against Iowa, Indiana and Penn State, and has faltered to Ohio State and Illinois.
Hannah Dewey owns a .391 batting average, highlighted by 50 hits, 23 RBIs, 12 doubles and three homers. Erin Pronobis follows with a .390 clip, along with a team-high 43 RBIs, 53 hits, 11 home runs and a .699 slugging percentage.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser paces the pitching staff with a 3.35 ERA and an overall record of 18-7. Schmeiser ranks sixth in the conference with 156 strikeouts and is third in the league with 18 wins.
Head coach Courtney Scott Deifel is in her first season with the Terps.
