MADISON, Wis. - The Rutgers men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 contest at Wisconsin Saturday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
The night's lone goal was scored by the Badgers (5-2-1, 3-1-0 Big Ten) in the 36th minute of play. From the far end line, Mike Catalano passed to Sam Brotherton whose shot from eight-yards out went high into the center of the goal.
Both teams ended the night with 13 shots apiece. Jason Wright and Rayon Gibbs led RU with three shots each.
The Scarlet Knights (0-8-1, 0-4-1 Big Ten) had one of their best looks at the equalizer in the game's closing moments. Ross Tetro crossed the ball into the box looking to Rayon Gibbs for the header at the far post. The two could not connect and the Wisconsin defense used only one tap to clear the ball, which was then collected by Niel Guzman six-yards out. Guzman fired at the center of the Wisconsin net, but Badger keeper Phillip Schilling came up with the save to prevent extra time for his team.
Rutgers' David Greczek logged six saves in the loss. Wisconsin's Schilling, meanwhile, registered three saves.
"We played well tonight, but gave them the one chance they need to win the game," said head coach Dan Donigan. "We need to key on not giving up easy opportunities for our opponents. While we held them to only one goal, it was the deciding factor. We'll come home and regroup for our upcoming homestand."
The Rutgers men's soccer team returns home to Yurcak Field for its next four games. The homestand begins Friday night with Michigan at 7 p.m.
