Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie with Michigan on Friday night at Yurcak Field. Junior Niel Guzman captured the RU goal prior to the intermission as the Scarlet Knights outshot the Wolverines, 23-19.

The Wolverines (2-6-4, 1-4-1 Big Ten) took the 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of action. Franics Atuahene dribbled from the top of the 18 into the box leading to a Jack Hallahan goal from six-yards out at the center of the net.

The Scarlet Knights (0-8-2, 0-4-2) would knot the score at 1-1 before the intermission though. From the left side, Ross Tetro fed Dante Perez inside the box. Perez, who was charging on net, controlled the ball, passing it to Guzman at the center of the Wolverine net. Guzman played the ball off his chest and blasted it off his left foot into the lower right corner to tie the game in the 38th minute.

Twice Rutgers had chances at a game-winner in the second half that would ricochet off the crossbar. Ryan Peterson fired from just inside the 18 in the 62nd minute and hit the corner of the crossbar and left post, while Guzman was denied a second goal off a header six-yards out in the 84th minute.

RU had an opportunity for the golden goal moments into the first overtime. A pair of Wolverine defenders along with keeper Evan Louro slid down to thwart a shot by Thomas Dovell at the far post. The ball made it past the Michigan scramble to the right foot of Perez, but his tap went over the crossbar.

RU's David Greczek made four stops in goal, including two saves in the second overtime.

Tyler Morris managed to deprive Atuahene of the potential golden goal with under three minutes remaining. Atuahene received a long ball, drawing Greczek out to try and halt the play. The ball bounced over the Scarlet Knight keeper, but Morris raced in from behind to interrupt the shot.

"I thought it was a very high-energy, high-paced game. Both teams wanted the points," said head coach Dan Donigan. "I thought everyone played hard. The speed of play was fast, it was physical and there was a lot of resilience shown by our guys. I'm proud of the effort. I wish they could've gotten the three points they deserve. I felt we created enough to maybe get the game-winner, but it's been a little bit how the luck been for us this year. Any given night that can turn and hopefully that will be Tuesday night where we start to get the bounces and the breaks."

The Rutgers men's soccer team returns to nonconference action on Tuesday night against Princeton at 7 p.m.
