Volleyball Falls to Ohio State
Nov 11 | Women's Volleyball
COLUMBUS, OHIO -- The Rutgers women's volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Ohio State on the road Friday night. The Buckeyes (16-11, 6-9 Big Ten) claimed the match over the Scarlet Knights (4-23, 0-15 Big Ten) by set scores of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-16.
OSU marked the ninth opponent either ranked or receiving votes to cross RU's path this season. After sitting at 22nd nationally last week, the Buckeyes fell from the rankings after losses to No. 3 Wisconsin and Indiana, but are still receiving votes in the poll.
Rutgers was led by senior right side Lauren Cloyd with seven kills and .312 hitting percentage. Fifth-year middle blocker Mikaela Matthews paced the squad with two blocks.
Ohio State was led by Taylor Sandbothe with 10 kills to go with a .533 hitting percentage. Sandboth also added in a match-high four service aces. Taylor Hughes and Madison Smeathers followed with eight kills each.
After falling in the first frame, the Scarlet Knights found energy at the start of the second set, inching in front 4-3. However, the Buckeyes responded with a 6-0 run to move in front, 10-5. OSU moved forward with its momentum to create a sizeable lead that RU was unable to cut into.
In the third, the Scarlet Knights rallied back from a 4-1 deficit to pull within one at 6-5. The Buckeyes, began to pull away on the board, but a Cole Trimble kill held the score at 8-6. From there, OSU managed to distance the score once again en route to its third consecutive set win of the night.
