Game Notes
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers hosts Molloy this Friday (Nov. 11) evening in a 7 p.m. tip-off at the RAC in the 2016-17 season opener, which marks head coach Steve Pikiell's first regular season game at the helm. The Scarlet Knights have a 75-29 all-time record in game one contests.
Attending fans will receive free schedule magnets. In addition, 300 level tickets are available for just $2.50 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Rutgers University. The Amazing Sladek, America's oldest daredevil hand balancer, will perform at halftime.
The game marks the first of eight non-conference contests RU will host at the truncated pyramid and the first of two this weekend. Drexel visits the RAC on Sunday for a 4 p.m. match-up on BTN.
Friday's game will be streamed live via the web on BTN Plus, with Kevin Fitzgerald calling the action and Danny Breslauer providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Jerry Recco will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7) will also broadcast the game.
In addition to the coaching staff, many players competing on the hardwood this weekend are seeing their first game action "On the Banks." The Scarlet Knights welcome six scholarship newcomers who will be playing in an RU jersey for the initial time, while returning five scholarship players that combined to miss 85 games last season.
Guards Mike Williams and Corey Sanders are the most experienced returning players after starting 28 and 24 games, respectively, last season. Sanders was one of just two freshmen nationally, along with eventual top NBA Draft pick Ben Simmons, to average 15.9-plus points, 4.3-plus assists and 1.8-plus steals per game in 2015-16.
Rutgers' four-member coaching staff of Pikiell, Karl Hobbs, Brandin Knight and Jay Young have combined for 47 post-season appearances as players, staffers or coaches, including 30 NCAA Tournament berths and two NCAA Championships. At least one member of the Rutgers coaching staff has advanced to the post-season for 23 consecutive years, since 1993.
Molloy, a member of the East Coast Conference and under the leadership of 22nd-year head coach Charles Marquardt, posted a 9-19 overall record in 2015-16. Located on Long Island in Rockville Centre, twelve of the 13 players listed on roster hail from the state of New York. Senior guard Jaylen Morris, a Second Team All-Met and Third Team All-ECC choice last season, has scored over 1,000 career points.
