Rutgers Game Notes
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (6-1) returns to the friendly confines of the RAC to host Morgan State (2-5) Saturday evening in a 7 p.m. tip-off. After a 6-0 start, the program's best since 1975-76, the Scarlet Knights are working to return to the win column and improve to 6-0 at home for the first time since 2010-11 (7-0). RU also has the opportunity to match its victory total from the entire 2015-16 campaign in eight games. Rutgers is receiving one vote in this week's Associated Press poll and was last ranked in the final AP poll of 1978-79, when it concluded the season No. 18.
Saturday night will feature post-game player autographs and free team posters on the concourse, as well as dollar hot dogs. In addition, fans will receive free silicone wristbands upon entry while supplies last.
The Scarlet Knights lead the nation in offensive rebounding (17.9) after concluding the 2015-16 campaign tied for 249th in the category. RU is also fifth in rebounding margin (13.4) and eighth in total rebounding (45.1).
Saturday's game will be streamed live via the web on BTN Plus, with Dom Savino calling the action and Dick Lloyd providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Jerry Recco will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The contest signals the first meeting on the collegiate hardwood between the Scarlet Knights and Bears. MSU assistant coach Brian Ellerbe played at Rutgers from 1981-85, was a member of the Atlantic 10 All-Freshman Team, and ranks second at RU in career assists with 495.
Rutgers dropped a 73-61 decision at Miami in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge Wednesday evening. Junior guard Mike Williams paced the Scarlet Knights off the bench, scoring 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and grabbing four steals in 19 minutes. Sophomore Guard Corey Sanders and redshirt junior forward Deshawn Freeman joined Williams in double figures, contributing 12 and 11 points, respectively. RU had 12 steals while forcing 19 Miami turnovers, but the Hurricanes made 48.1 percent (26-of-54) of their field goal attempts and outrebound the visitors by a 44-30 margin.
Freeman ranks tied for 11th nationally in double-doubles. He is the first RU player to have four double-doubles in the initial six games of a season since Keith Hughes in 1990-91.
Morgan State, under the leadership of 11th-year head coach Todd Bozeman, is looking to snap a three-game skid after suffering a 62-61 buzzer-beating home loss against High Point on Monday. Junior forward Phillip Carr, a Preseason All-MEAC selection, has earned the league's defensive player of the week award in consecutive weeks. Junior guard Tiwian Kendley paces the Bears in scoring with 19.7 points-per-game. MSU was picked ninth in the annual MEAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
