Dec 08 | Men's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers Athletics Hall of Famer Hollis Copeland will be one of four Legends honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) on Sunday, Dec. 18, at the 2016 Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. The recognition will take place at halftime of the 11 a.m. contest between St. John's and Penn State, before Rutgers meets Fordham in the second game of the doubleheader at approximately 1 p.m.
Copeland will be joined by Tyler Smith (Penn State), Marcus Stout (Fordham) and Kathy Meehan (St. John's) to be recognized for their contributions to ECAC basketball.
A graceful forward, Copeland was a standout on the great Rutgers teams of the mid-1970's. He is the fifth-leading scorer in Scarlet Knights history with 1,769 points and his 850 rebounds are sixth best on the all-time RU charts. Copeland enjoyed his best statistical season as a junior, when he averaged 16.1 points per game, to go with 8.1 rebounds. His career average was 14.6 points per game and 7.0 rebounds. As a sophomore, he was an integral member of the 1975-76 Final Four team. His teams qualified for post-season play in all four of his years with a pair of NCAA and NIT appearances. An Honorable Mention All-American in 1977, Copeland was a third-round pick of the NBA's Denver Nuggets. His NBA career also included a stint with the New York Knicks.
There is no television coverage scheduled for the match-up between Rutgers and Fordham. Fans can listen to the game on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network (WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick and WOR 710 AM in New York) with Jerry Recco and Joe Boylan on the call.
The Holiday Festival is the nation's longest-running in-season college basketball event. Tickets for the doubleheader begin at $35.00 and can be purchased via the Rutgers Ticket Office by clicking here or calling 732-445-GORU (4678).
