MINNEAPOLIS - Sophomore forward D.J. Foreman had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, but Rutgers (6-22, 0-15) struggled in the second half in an 83-61 loss to Minnesota (8-19, 2-13) at Williams Arena on Tuesday night. With only nine RU players available, including just six on scholarship, the Golden Gophers benefitted from a 36-12 advantage in bench points to earn the victory.
Bishop Daniels contributed 12 points to join Foreman in double figures.
Minnesota shot 46.2 percent (30-of-65), while the Scarlet Knights made 40.7 percent (22-of-54) of their field goal attempts. The Gophers established a 45-35 edge in rebounds, resulting in a 15-3 buffer for the hosts in points off offensive rebounds.
Rutgers trailed by one point at halftime, but the deeper Gophers squad utilized their size to pull away after the midpoint before their home crowd.
Senior forward/center Greg Lewis (foot) was sidelined for the first time this season. The Scarlet Knights were also without the services of guard Corey Sanders (16.2 ppg, 4.1 apg), forward Deshawn Freeman (13.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg), center Ibrahima Diallo (3.8 ppg, 3.7 rpg) and center Shaquille Doorson in addition to Lewis (4.0 ppg, 5.1 rpg).
The Scarlet Knights got off to a good start, scoring in the paint often. RU used an early 6-0 run and six early points from Foreman to take a 10-6 lead.
The Scarlet Knights held Minnesota to 3-of-11 from the field in the early going. Omari Grier got a steal and finished off the fast break with a layup, capping a 7-0 run to give the visitors a 19-10 advantage.
The home team called timeout, and came out of the break with a counterattack. The Gophers used an 18-7 burst from that point to retake the lead at 28-26. Rutgers kept attacking, using three-pointers from Khalil Batie and Justin Goode. U of M scored the final basket of the opening stanza, and took a slim 32-31 lead into the locker room.
The home squad used a scoring run coming out of the gate in the second half, outscoring the Scarlet Knights 12-1 to open the half and take a 41-32 lead. The Gophers extended that advantage to 18 points with 8:24 remaining, sealing the victory.
The Scarlet Knights will conclude a stretch of three out of four games on the road with a trip this weekend to Northwestern. Tip-off in Evanston on Saturday is at 2 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPNU.
