Delaware Outlasts WLAX, 13-9
Feb 27 | Women's Lacrosse
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers women's lacrosse and visiting Delaware traded punches with multi-goal runs throughout the game, but the Blue Hens ultimately prevailed, 13-9, Saturday afternoon at High Point Solutions Stadium.
Delaware (4-1) scored five of the first six goals to begin the second half to put the game out of reach for Rutgers (1-3). The Scarlet Knights got production from multiple players on the attack, led by junior Kristina Dunphey (Hillsborough, N.J.) who scored a hat trick and tallied an assist. Seniors Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.J.) and Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) each scored twice, with Paige Paratore (West Deptford, N.J.) and Joanna Reilly (Spring Lake, N.J.) also adding goals.
"We made some key mistakes and they're a really solid team that's going to capitalize on those mistakes," said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. "But I think those stretches where we went on three-goal runs and had those moments we show what we have the capability of doing. It's just a matter of putting together more runs like that and being confident in our ability."
RU rallied to end the first half with goals from Reilly and Barnes in a 30-second span. But Delaware's Jaime Schwartz - one of two Blue Hens with a hat trick and an assist - scored twice amid Delaware's second-half surge, making the Blue Hen lead, 13-7, with 10:09 to play.
Paratore and Dunphey each scored goals inside 10 minutes to bring RU within four, but Delaware went on to control possession late to close out the win. Freshman Devon Kearns (Marlton, N.J.) entered the game in relief of sophomore Bianca Dente (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) in cage in the first half and made six saves in 35:55 minutes. Dente started and made four saves in 24:05 minutes of action.
RU travels to No. 13 Penn on Wednesday, March 2 for a 6:30 p.m. contest. The game will stream live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
