Scarlet Knights 11th in Season Opener

FRESNO, Calif. - Rutgers women's golf placed 11th with a 617 (313-304) score at the 15-team Fresno State Classic, played Monday and Tuesday at San Joaquin Country Club. The Scarlet Knights improved by nine strokes on day two in the competitive field to finish ahead of Montana, Florida Gulf Coast, Grand Canyon and Idaho.
Senior Racquel Zurick shot a team, tournament-best 74 on the par 72, 6,119-yard course on Tuesday. She finished tied for 33rd in the 82-player field with a 151 (77-74).
Sophomore Emily Mills also performed well, carding consecutive 76's to place tied for 36th with a 152.
Seniors Christina Paulsen and Jacquelyn Mullens and sophomore Tatum Jackson comprised the rest of the Scarlet scorecard. Paulson tied for 57th with a 157 (80-77), Mullens tied for 60th with a 158 (81-77) and Jackson was 73rd with a 163 (80-83).
The Classic was originally slated for 54 holes, but was reduced to 36 due to rain eliminating the morning round on Monday.
Host Fresno State claimed its third-straight Classic team championship. The Bulldogs fired a one-over-par 577 to win by an eight stroke margin over runner-up Boise State. Santa Clara's Annie Freman captured individual medalist honors with an eight-under 136 (67-69).
The Classic was the first of four events in which the Scarlet Knights will compete during the spring season, under head coach Kari Williams, before the Big Ten Championship in Indianapolis. RU next takes to the links at the BYU at Entrada Classic, March 15-16.
