Softball Bows Out of Big Ten Tournament to Ohio State
May 12 | Softball
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. (May 11, 2016) - No. 11 seed Rutgers softball saw its run at the 2016 Big Ten Tournament halted by No. 6 seed Ohio State on Thursday at Beard Field at Penn State.
Rutgers ended 2016 with an overall record of 24-33, while Ohio State improved to 33-17-1 overall and advanced to the second round of the tournament to take on third-seeded Northwestern.
Senior Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) (9-15) registered her ninth complete game of the season in the loss, while Lera Springer (5-3) picked up a complete-game victory for OSU.
Junior Carly Todd (Deptford, N.J.) led RU with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, including a double. Senior Stephanie Huang (Paramus, N.J.) and sophomore Rebecca Hall (Fairfax, Va.) also added a hit in the loss.
The Buckeyes were led by Cammi Prantl, a First Team All-Big Ten selection, with two hits, two RBIs and two runs. Maddy McIntyre, a Second Team All-Big Ten and All- Defensive Team selection, added a home run and two RBIs in the win.
Despite hits for Hall and Todd in the first and second innings, respectively, RU was unable to gain an offensive rhythm.
In the bottom of the second, a walk and an error helped the Buckeyes put two runners on base. Becca Gavin then registered an RBI single to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead. However, Maddox induced a fly out to strand two runners on and hold the margin at one run.
The Buckeyes continued to extend their lead to 3-0 on a two-run homer for McIntyre in the bottom of the third.
As the RU offense still struggled to plate a run, Maddox worked a 1-2-3 frame in the fourth to keep it a three-run contest.
Todd led off fifth inning with a double to right center, advancing to third on a sacrifice drive from Meaghan Wells. However, the momentum was not enough to ignite an RU rally.
OSU responded with a two-run homer this time for Prantl to extend the Buckeye edge to 5-0.
Maddox capped off a scoreless sixth inning by stranding a Buckeye on base. However, the Scarlet Knight bats remained silent in the top of the seventh for the game's final margin.
