PISCATAWAY, N.J. - No. 12 Rutgers women's soccer went ahead early against visiting Georgetown, but two goals from midfielder Rachel Corboz, including the game-winner in the opening minute of overtime, gave the Hoyas the upset over the Scarlet Knights by a 2-1 final Friday night at Yurcak Field.
The match ended 25 seconds into the first overtime period. Georgetown's (4-1) Grace Damaska pushed the ball into the middle of the field to Corboz just outside the 18-yard box. Corboz took a touch before unloading with her right foot, hitting the back of the net near the left post for the game-winner.
Senior goalkeeper Alana Jimenez tied a career-high with six saves in the loss, with five coming in a huge second-half performance during a surge of Hoya corner kicks. But there was no getting to Corboz's strike, which upended the Scarlet Knights (3-1-1) at home for the first time in 18 contests.
The match was tied at halftime following a busy opening 20 minutes that saw both sides find pay dirt.
The Scarlet Knights were whistled for a foul inside the box in the 15th minute to set Georgetown up for a penalty opportunity. Corboz finished the chance to knot the game at 1-1.
Eleven minutes earlier RU jumped out to a quick lead off the foot of senior forward Madison Tiernan. Classmate Jennifer Andresen headed the ball forward from midfield to set Tiernan up for a run. The Voorhees, New Jersey, native dribbled ahead and shook the Hoya defense before booting a left-footed laser at the right post for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Tiernan's team-leading third this season, as she paced the Scarlet Knights with three shots.
RU continues its six-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 9 against Cornell at 7 p.m. The Scarlet Knights close out their nonconference schedule on Sunday, Sept. 11 against Drexel. Both matches will stream live on BTN Plus.
