PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (11-7, 0-5) plays its sixth game away from the RAC over eight contests, when it travels to Bloomington to meet Indiana (11-6, 1-3) in a 12 noon tip-off on Sunday at 17,222-seat Assembly Hall. The Scarlet Knights will be working to return to the win column and earn their initial Big Ten Conference road win. Indiana has been ranked as high as No. 3 this season, but has dropped four of its past five contests. The Hoosiers are the fifth Rutgers opponent out of seven games to have been ranked or receiving votes this season.
Rutgers is fifth nationally in rebounds-per-game (42.67), 17th in rebound margin (+7.8) and 21st in field goal percentage defense (39.0). Indiana ranks fourth in rebound margin (+12.1), sixth in rebounds-per-game (42.12) and 14th in field goal percentage (50.0).
Sunday's game will be televised live on BTN, with Jeff Levering calling the action and Shon Morris providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary.
The contest will mark the fifth meeting between RU and IU, with the Hoosiers winning the prior four match-ups. Last season, Rutgers out-scored Indiana in the paint and established a 16-point advantage in points-off-turnovers, but was unable to pull the upset in a 79-72 loss at the RAC. In the only meeting in Bloomington, Myles Mack had 24 points and eight assists in a 72-64 defeat to No. 22/21 Indiana on Jan. 31, 2015. The first meeting occurred on Dec. 27, 1980 at the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu. Clarence Tillman had 15 points and Kelvin Troy contributed 13 in the 55-50 loss to then No. 15 Indiana.
Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell and assistant coach Jay Young have paced the Assembly Hall sideline twice while directing Stony Brook. Indiana defeated the Seawolves, 96-66, in Nov. 2011 and 90-74 in Nov. 2013. RU Director of Basketball Operations Bryan Dougher started at point guard for SBU in the first match-up.
Deshawn Freeman had his eighth double-double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, but Rutgers dropped a 69-60 decision to Northwestern Thursday evening at the RAC. Corey Sanders added 18 points for the Scarlet Knights, who led at the break for the second consecutive contest. RU limited the Wildcats to 38.1 percent (24-of-63) shooting, but were unable to tweak the twine themselves before the home crowd. RU made just 31.9 percent (22-of-69) of its field goal attempts, while being out-rebounded by a 49-41 margin.
Indiana, under the leadership of ninth-year head coach Tom Crean, suffered a 75-72 loss at Maryland on Tuesday in a game that featured nine ties and 15 lead changes. Junior James Blackmon, Jr. became the 50th player in IU history to reach the 1,000-point mark, finishing with a team-high 22 points. Last week, he matched his Big Ten career-high with 25 points against Illinois. The defending Big Ten Champions, Indiana has made 23 of its last 48 three-point field goal attempts.
