BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Rutgers (11-8, 0-6) became the first team to out-rebound Indiana (12-6, 2-3) this season, establishing a 38-29 advantage on the boards, but the Scarlet Knights dropped a 76-57 decision at Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon. Seventeen points from Corey Sanders was not enough to overcome 21 miscues, which resulted in a 33-10 advantage in points off turnovers and a 21-2 buffer in fast break points for the Hoosiers.

"I knew this would be a difficult game for us today," said Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell. "Indiana was very efficient offensively. They got a lot of guys that can hurt you. They played really well. We unfortunately turned the ball over a lot, missed a lot of free throws. Credit Indiana, the good job that they do. We're moving on to the next one."

The Scarlet Knights struggled at the charity stripe. RU deposited 12 of 26, while the Hoosiers made 14-of-18, providing a two-point edge despite eight fewer attempts.

Sanders was 7-of-14 from the field and was joined in double figures by. C.J. Gettys. The graduate center shot 5-of-10 to contribute 12 points, while adding a team-best seven rebounds.

"Corey's played a lot better in the last few weeks," said Pikiell. "He's done a great job in film prep and he ran our team today. I thought we had great efforts from a lot of our guys, but the ball needs to go in a little bit more. Free throws, layups, some timely misses - that could have made this thing a little more interesting."

The Scarlet Knights opened the game hot, with Sanders fueling the early going, scoring seven quick points to give RU an 11-4 lead. Deshawn Freeman provided a spark of the bench with consecutive baskets, and the visitors extended their advantage to 17-10.

The Hoosiers stormed back, responding with an 8-0 run to take the lead. Sanders scored five consecutive points, diminishing the deficit to 27-23.

The Hoosiers responded with a 10-0 burst over the next two minutes to push their lead to 14 at 37-23. Indiana capitalized on RU's 11 first half turnovers, converting them into 17 points, resulting in a 41-32 lead at the intermission.

Indiana started the second half on an 11-4 spurt, extending their lead to 16 points. RU used a 6-0 run to cut the home team's advantage to 56-44 halfway through the second stanza. The Hoosiers built their lead to 19 with a three-pointer at the 5:19 mark that forced a Rutgers' timeout. The home squad finished off the win by the same margin.

Rutgers returns home for its next game, which comes after a five-day break. The Scarlet Knights will host Nebraska on Saturday, Jan. 21 at noon. That game will be televised on ESPNU.
