No. 15 Michigan Outlasts No. 11 Wrestling, 19-13
Jan 27 | Wrestling
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - No. 15 Michigan topped No. 11 Rutgers wrestling, 19-13, Friday evening at Cliff Keen Arena. UM (6-4, 3-4) took six of 10 bouts, including a crucial 5-1 decision at 197 pounds to dispel a potential Scarlet Knight comeback. RU drops to 9-3 on the season and 3-2 in Big Ten Conference competition.
The Scarlet Knights, trailing 6-0 on the scoreboard through two matches, briefly took the lead following an 11-0 major decision at 149 pounds from No. 14 Ken Theobold. Theobold improves to 15-5 on the season and has won his last three matches via tech fall, tech fall, and major decision.
But Michigan's No. 12 Brian Murphy gave the lead back to the Wolverines for good with a win in the highly-anticipated matchup with No. 17 John Van Brill at 157 pounds.
Murphy was awarded a takedown that stood after a Rutgers challenge to end the first period. The former All-American closed out the match in the third period with an escape and takedown. The 6-1 loss ends Van Brill's (17-8) win streak at two.
No. 6 141-pounder Anthony Ashnault (141 Pounds), No. 13 Nicholas Gravina (184 Pounds), and heavyweight Razohnn Gross all captured decisions to round out the team scoring in the match. Ashnault (19-3) and Gravina (15-4) both fell short of bonus points in what would have been big scoring boosts for RU.
UM's Sal Profaci scored his only two in the final period against Ashnault to prevent a major decision, while Aaron Calderon halted Gravina from getting one last takedown in a 10-3 loss to the Scarlet Knight.
Following Gravina's win RU needed consecutive victories to either tie or win the dual, starting with Matthew Correnti at 197 pounds. The freshman fell short against Jackson Striggow, who iced the 5-1 win with a third period takedown.
Gross moves to 8-7 overall after a three-takedown, 7-4 win against Michigan's Dan Perry. Gross has won two matches in a row and three of his last four.
The Scarlet Knights make the short trip to East Lansing, Michigan, for a 2 p.m. dual on Sunday against Michigan State. The match will be televised live on Big Ten Network, with Shane Sparks and Jim Gibbons on the call.
