PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Building momentum throughout the meet, Rutgers gymnastics picked up its first Big Ten win of the season with a 194.875 team score to sweep a quad meet Saturday night at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights topped Michigan State (194.050), Cornell (193.525) and Ursinus (191.350) to improve to 8-4 overall.
"It is always great to win," head coach Louis Levine said. "We did a lot today to persevere through a couple falls here or there to put the pressure on, but we kept competing and came through every time. That shows a lot of growth in the direction we want to continue to move in. I am really excited about the win tonight."
With "Coach Lou's Luau" energizing the team and the crowd, RU posted eight scores of at least 9.800 on the night. The performance pushed the Scarlet Knights to their second regular season Big Ten win since joining the conference.
Freshman Chloe DeVries helped Rutgers to a 48.350 on vault with a career-high 9.800 mark to tie for first in the meet. Sophomore Michelle Amoresano and senior Claire Jones also reached 9.775 and 9.700, respectively, in the first rotation.
Moving to uneven bars, the Scarlet Knights notched a season-best 48.725 with four scores of at least 9.700. Senior April Baker placed tied for second overall with a 9.800 to lead the way, while juniors Libby Groden and Makenzey Shank both put up a 9.775. Amoresano added a 9.700.
The Scarlet Knights matched the 48.725 next on balance beam to continue the consistency in the event. Shank anchored with a 9.875 to tie for first overall, as Groden started off with a 9.800. Jones recorded a 9.775 to reach that number for the fourth time in as many attempts this season.
Jones then capped off the night with a second-place 9.875 as the anchor to a season-best 49.075 floor exercise total. Sophomore Jenna Rizkalla and DeVries proceeded with a pair of 9.850 routines, with Groden also achieving a 9.800. Amoresano contributed a 9.700 to round out the high scores.
For Groden, her all-around total equaled a 39.050 to match her career-best mark set two times previously last season. Amoresano also picked up a 38.275 in her first collegiate meet competing in all four events.
It was the fourth meet in the last three years for RU at the RAC, which will be the site of the 2017 Big Ten Championships.
Rutgers will bring its show to the road next week with a Saturday Big Ten meet at Ohio State. The competition will begin at 4 p.m.
