PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers women's basketball team dropped a 55-37 decision to Northwestern on Sunday afternoon at the RAC.
Rutgers Athletics and The Varsity R Letterwinners Association honored the 1982 AIAW and 1987 Atlantic 10 championship women's basketball teams at halftime of the contest. The Scarlet Knights welcomed back past members of the storied squads to the court during intermission.
Sophomore guard Aliyah Jeune led RU (6-16, 3-6 Big Ten) with a 14 points off the bench, including 12 from 3-point range. Junior guard Shrita Parker followed with nine points and seven rebounds. Northwestern (16-5, 5-3 Big Ten) was led by Lauren Douglas with 16 points, followed by Amber Jamison with 19 points for the Wildcats.
After opening the game with a 6-0 run, Rutgers continued to extend its lead to 14-7 guided by two 3-pointers for Jeune and a jumper for Barber. With less than two minutes left in the first quarter, Northwestern responded with five-straight points of its own to cut the margin to 14-12.
Moving into the second frame, the Wildcats pushed in front, 15-14, on a free throw for Nia Coffey and a jumper for Ashley Deary at the 8:18 minute mark. Parker immediately answered with a 3-pointer to guide RU on its way back to a 19-15 lead with 5:30 remaining. Northwestern, however, tacked on seven unanswered points, ignited by a shot from downtown for Abi Scheid, to close the second for a 22-19 lead at the break.
Northwestern returned to open the third quarter with a 9-0 surge and kept the Scarlet Knights without a field goal until halfway through the stanza. As the Scarlet Knight offense hit a lull, the Wildcats used success from the 3-point range to go on to a 44-26 lead at the end of three.
Throughout the fourth and final frame, Northwestern would hold at least an 18-point edge for the remainder of the contest.
Rutgers hits the road for a midweek matchup at Iowa on Thursday, Feb. 2. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. ET. The Scarlet Knights then return home to host Indiana on Wednesday, Feb. 8.
