PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers gymnastics started its 2017 season with a 192.875 team score to place second in a Saturday quad meet at the Livingston Gym. The Scarlet Knights topped Bridgeport (191.225) and William & Mary (188.275), while New Hampshire claimed first with a 193.425.
"I thought we did a really good job today," sixth-year head coach Louis Levine said. "The team started out strong and carried it through to the end. Overall, this was a good start and a stepping stone as the season progresses. It was the first step in a long season."
The Scarlet Knights scored best in the first rotation with a 48.500 on vault. Senior Claire Jones led the team and placed tied for second in the meet with a 9.775 run, while freshman Chloe DeVries followed closely behind with a 9.750 in her collegiate debut. In addition, junior Libby Groden added a 9.675 as the leadoff.
Moving to uneven bars, junior Makenzey Shank and sophomore Michelle Amoresano both scored a team-high 9.750. Groden also added a 9.700, while senior April Baker made her return with a 9.675 to help RU pick up a 48.425.
Jones notched her second 9.775 of the day on balance beam to pace the Scarlet Knights and tie for third in the meet. The team totaled a 47.950.
Rutgers ended the day with a 48.000 on floor exercise, as Groden collected her third score of at least 9.700 with a 9.750. She notched a 38.825 all-around, with DeVries also seeing action in all four events to total a 37.875.
Despite snow in the area, the attendance of 877 marked the eighth consecutive sellout at the Livingston Gym.
The Scarlet Knights will next hit the road for the first time this season with a trip to Illinois for the Big Ten opener. Eastern Michigan and Illinois-Chicago will also be in the quad meet, which is slated for next Saturday at 5 p.m. ET.
