PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's lacrosse announced its 2017 individual award winners last week at its team picnic. The award ceremony was held in conjunction with the Scarlet Knights HEADstrong Fall tournament at the F3 Practice Fields on Busch Campus.
Five awards – Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Year, Midfield Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Most Improved Player of the Year – were voted on by the players. The coaches voted on the Coaches Award and the Genna Camiolo Award.
RU wrapped up its successful 2017 season with an 8-8 record, which included a 2-4 mark in Big Ten Conference play. The Scarlet Knights recorded a ranked victory over then-No. 18 James Madison and collected wins against Ohio State and Michigan during the spring.
Bianca Dente earned 2017 Most Valuable Player honors. The rising senior goalie started all 16 games last season for the Scarlet Knights, and finished with 116 saves and 28 ground balls to lead the program. In RU's road victory over Michigan last April, Dente recorded seven saves, including a clutch stop in the final seconds to secure the win.
Amanda Turturro was named 2017 Offensive Player of the Year. The recent graduate started all 16 games last season for the Scarlet Knights and finished with 38 points (20g, 18a). Her 18 helpers were the most for the program that season, while her 20 goals were third in that category for RU.
Rising senior Paige Paratore was awarded 2017 Midfield Player of the Year. In 16 starts last season, Paratore collected 23 points, which included 16 goals. Paratore also added seven assists and collected 21 draw controls, 18 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers.
Rising senior Amanda Casten was designated 2017 Defensive Player of the Year. A two-time All-Big Ten selection, Casten anchored the Scarlet Knight defense with 21 ground balls, 10 draw controls and 12 caused turnovers in 2017. In RU's 12-9 victory over then-No. 18 James Madison, Casten forced two turnovers and corralled two ground balls to help Rutgers secure the road win.
Rising senior Nicole Kopyta was given 2017 Most Improved Player of the Year designation. After missing the majority of the 2016 season due to injury, Kopyta was a constant offensive threat during her redshirt junior campaign in 2017. Last year, Kopyta fired off 24 goals in 16 games, good for second on the team.
Rising sophomore Samantha Scarpello earned the Coaches Award, given to the player who best exemplifies the ideals of the program. Classmate Monica Dresnin was presented the Genna Camiolo Award, which is given to the player who exhibits perseverance through adversity. Recent graduate Delaney Tuite was recognized as the team's Academic Award recipient after she finished with the highest GPA for Rutgers last season.
