PISCATAWAY - Rutgers will work to improve to 13-0 in non-conference home games under
Steve Pikiell when it welcomes Bryant on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off. It will mark the second meeting between the Scarlet Knights and Bulldogs, with RU winning the first match-up, 67-37, on Dec. 20, 2008 at the RAC. The contest is the third of eight games this regular season to be played on a two-day turnaround. Tyler's Amazing Balancing Act will perform at halftime.
In the most recent (Nov. 18) NCAA statistics, Rutgers leads the nation in scoring defense, is third in rebound margin and personal fouls, is eighth in total rebounds, and is ninth in defensive rebounds per game. The Scarlet Knights lead the Big Ten Conference in eight team categories: scoring defense (45.5), FG% defense (.324), 3-point FG% defense (.242), rebounding offense (49.8), rebounding margin (+18.8), offensive rebounds (15.8), defensive rebounds (34.0) and defensive rebound % (.872).
Rutgers is one of nine D-I teams with six players averaging double digits in scoring (Nebraska, Oregon, Mississippi State, Cincinnati, Gonzaga, New Mexico, Villanova, Western Kentucky).
Tuesday's game will be streamed live via the web on BTN Plus, with Lou Brogno calling the action and Dom Savino providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Jerry Recco will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
Eugene Omoruyi shot 7-of-11 off the bench to score a career-high 19 points to help Rutgers to a 64-39 victory over Coppin State Sunday afternoon at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights limited the Eagles to 29.1 percent (16-of-55) shooting. Omoruyi, who also played a career-high 25 minutes and grabbed a career-best tying eight rebounds, was joined in double figures by
Corey Sanders (13),
Geo Baker (11) and
Deshawn Freeman (10). Baker was 5-of-10 from the field, while Freeman deposited 4-of-9 shots. The Scarlet Knights accumulated 52 rebounds to establish a 15-2 advantage in second chance points and out-score the visitors 36-14 in the paint. Coppin State attempted just one free throw.
Rutgers has held three teams under 40 points. The last time RU limited three or more opponents to under 40 points in a season was 1945-46 (Haverford, Franklin & Marshall, Panzer, Camp Kilmer).
Under 10th-year head coach Tim O'Shea, Bryant is led by Adam Grant, who has scored 14 or more points in every game to lead the team with a 20.7 scoring average. The sophomore guard is among the national leaders in 3-point FGs per game (3.67). The Bulldogs are coming off a hard-fought, 79-71, home loss to Navy on Saturday after dropping road contests at Georgia and N.C. State to begin the season. Bryant was picked 8th in the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll.
