Cochrane leads with three total wins at three-day event
WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2017) – Rutgers tennis wrapped up the fall portion of the 2016-17 season this weekend at the Buffalo Invitational, picking up seven singles wins and four doubles victories during the four-day, hidden dual match format.
The Scarlet Knights topped Binghamton 9-1 on Friday before falling to the host Bulls 9-1 on Saturday. Rutgers closed out the invitational by dropping the hidden dual to St. John's 8-1.
"This was a tough weekend with a lot of tennis in a short amount of time, and against some tough competition," said head coach Hilary Ritchie. "We would have liked some more singles wins this weekend, but we didn't step up in the close situations. We're be working hard in the offseason to improve our consistency and pace."
RU rolled on Friday with six singles wins and sweeping the three doubles matches over Binghamton. Senior Mingxiu Du won 6-1, 6-3 at the top spot, followed by sophomore Kat Muzik's 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 2. Senior Chloe Lee followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles before sophomore Jaci Cochrane took care of business at No. 4 by a 6-2, 6-2 score. Freshman Isabelle Da Silva (6-2, 6-2) and senior Lee Levy (6-4, 6-1) completed a successful singles day.
The teams of Du/Cochrane, Lee/Muzik and Da Silva/freshman Kat Rosenberger were all victorious over Bighamton in doubles with a combined score of 18-5.
Buffalo proved to be a tougher challenge as Cochrane managed the only Rutgers victory on Saturday with a come-from-behind effort at the No. 4 position. Cochrane dropped the first set 6-4 before bouncing back for a resounding 6-1, 6-2 answer to take the three-setter.
Sunday saw St. John's sweep singles play, highlighted by Da Silva's tight setback, 7-6(7-5), 6-3, in the No. 5 slot. Levy and Da Silva salvaged a doubles win, 6-3, over the Red Storm's No. 3 team.
RU takes a long break from competition before returning to the indoor courts on Jan. 20-21 for the NJIT Invitational in Newark.
