PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women's basketball coach
C. Vivian Stringer has announced the signing of Zipporah Broughton to a national letter of intent, it was announced on Wednesday.
Broughton, a 5-7 point guard from Wetumpka, Alabama, is ranked No. 24 overall and the No. 5 point guard in the nation according to
ESPN Hoopgurlz and is coached by Freeah Smith at Robert E. Lee High School and Kim Powell with the Essence AAU club program.
Nicknamed "Zippy", she averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.1 steals, 3.9 assists and 1.8 blocks per game last season and was an All-USA Today Second Team State of Alabama honoree, an Al.com Second Team Super-State selection and was honored by the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) as being one of the top three players in Class 7A in 2017. Additionally, she shot 46 percent from the field, 73 percent from the free-throw line and 36.5 percent from 3-point range.
Off the court, Broughton is academically ranked as the top student out of the 292 members of the senior class at Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Alabama.
"She has potential off the roof," said Stringer of Broughton's signing on Wednesday. "It only seems appropriate as we begin the building of the RWJBarnabas Health Athletic Performance Center that we continue to add to the building blocks of our program with Zippy. She is what you would call your typical 'Rutgers guard'. Zippy is that type of person that can break you down. No one can control her or contain her one-on-one. She also comes in with a legitimate 3-point shot, has a scoring mentality and can be a disruptive defender as well. What makes Zippy real special is that she has a magnetic personality, in addition, she's a great leader on the court, as well as off the court. The fact she was the valedictorian of her junior class and is in line to be the valedictorian of her senior class speaks to how she is the ultimate student-athlete.
"Myself, as well as our coaching staff, feel blessed to have her a part of our program and look forward to her being a Scarlet Knight next year."
