
Softball Adds Shayla Sweeney to Staff

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers softball team welcomes former Scarlet Knight Shayla Sweeney to staff as a volunteer assistant coach, head coach Jay Nelson announced Monday.
"We are glad to have Shayla back on a permanent basis working with our team," said Nelson. "And to have her throwing BP and helping with all the details in practice and games. Welcome back Shayla."
Sweeney was a pitcher on the Rutgers softball team from 2014-17, becoming an important piece of the lineup as a freshman. During her senior season, the righthander started 31 contests, seeing action in a total of 39 games and pitching a team-high 152 innings. She tossed 10 complete games on the season, including three complete-game shutouts for RU.
Overall, Sweeney pitched a total of 418.1 innings in 111 appearances for the Scarlet Knights. Off the field, she was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Currently, Sweeney is a Game Day Public Relations Assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL. Additionally, she served as head coach for the New Jersey Gators 18U Showcase Softball team.
The Barrington, New Jersey, native earned a B.A. in communication with a minor in digital communication, information and media in May of 2017.
The Scarlet Knights also welcome Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning Zach Kinninger to the team for the 2017-18 season. Kinninger joins Rutgers following a stint at his alma mater, Findlay, where he also was a four-year football letterwinner.
