Walkowiak Hauls in Sixth Career Big Ten Diver of the Week Award
Dec 06 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Senior swept the diving events at Princeton’s Big Al Open
PARK RIDGE, Ill. (Dec. 6, 2017) – Senior Addison Walkowiak of Rutgers swimming and diving has been named the Big Ten Conference Diver of the Week for the period ending Dec. 3, announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The distinction represents Walkowiak's second Diver of the Week award of the season, having been named to the honor on Nov. 8. It marks her sixth career Diver of the Week tribute and ninth overall weekly honor from the Big Ten after winning B1G Freshman of the Week four times during the 2014-15 season.
"She had a great weekend," said head coach Frederick Woodruff. "Her 1-meter was stellar; she really dove up a storm. The coaches were buzzing about her performance, and it was the best 1-meter performance I have ever seen her produce. It bodes well for the rest of the season as she pursues success in the Big Ten Championships, NCAA Zone A Championships and beyond."
Walkowiak swept the three diving events at Princeton's Big Al Open last weekend, which included diving teams from Princeton, Dartmouth, Brown and Villanova. While winning the 1-meter event, the senior broke the Rutgers program and DeNunzio Pool records on the 1-meter board with a score of 332.15 in the finals on Friday.
She went on to claim the 3-meter title with a winning score of 286.45 on Saturday, followed by a victory in the platform diving event on Sunday with a season-high mark of 261.37. All three winning scores were NCAA Zone Championships qualifying marks as she prepares for "home board advantage" when Rutgers hosts the zone championships at the Rutgers Aquatics Center on March 5-7, 2018.
Walkowiak has now won seven diving events this season, and gets her next shot at another win on Jan. 12 in a home dual meet against Yale.
