Port St. Lucie, Fla. - Women's golf played its best round of the Central District Invitational on Tuesday, carding a 310 to conclude the tournament 14th with a 947 (316-321-310) total against top competition. Junior captain Emily Mills paced the effort, registering 15 pars and shooting minus-one on par four holes during the round, on the par 72, 6,265-yard, St. Lucie Trail Golf Course.
"Our play today was better than the score reflected, which sometimes happens in golf," said Rutgers head coach Kari Williams. "The bounce back round of the tournament goes to Emily with her 71 today. Her play in this final round was more in line with her season scoring average. We have a lot of work to do before Big Tens and we are looking forward competing in our remaining events."
Mills' day two effort was the second-best round over the final 18 holes and moved her into the top 50. She placed tied for 47th with a 236 (85-80-71) and showed marked improvement with each round in the Scarlet Knights' first event of the spring season.
Three of RU's competing five, comprised of two juniors, one sophomore and two freshmen, had their best round on Tuesday. Ashleigh Greenham carded a 78 to finish tied for 59th with a 240 (80-82-78) and Tatum Jackson shot 79 to place 71st with a 247 (83-85-79).
The rookie duo of Carrie-Ann Lee and Ana Maria Cortes was impressive. Lee finished tied for 54th with a 238 (76-79-83) and Cortes placed tied for 56th with a 239 (77-80-82).
Rutgers combined for 138 pars and 19 birdies in the Invitational, which was hosted by Michigan State and featured four programs in the Golfweek Team Collegiate Rankings top 50. Two rounds were played on Monday, with the final 18 contested on Tuesday.
No. 9-ranked Furman won the Invitational with an even par 864 (282-289-293), 23 strokes ahead of second place Memphis. The Paladins' Alice Chen captured individual medalist honors with a one-under 215 (70-71-74) in the 75-player field.
Rutgers returns to the links at the BYU at Entrada Classic, March 13-14, in St. George, Utah.
