PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Despite a scoring surge that featured four-straight goals late in the second half, Rutgers women's lacrosse fell to No. 10 Penn, 11-9, Wednesday afternoon at High Point Solutions Stadium. Senior captain Macy Scott collected her second-career hat trick, senior Kristina Dunphey produced five points (two goals, three assists) and redshirt junior Nicole Kopyta added two goals in the loss.
"Overall, we showed off some really nice things against an extremely good Penn team," said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. "We fought really hard tonight."
Down to the Quakers, 10-5, with 14:21 left in the game, the Scarlet Knights went on a 4-0 run to make it just 10-9 with 6:42 remaining. Scott capped the late push with her third goal of the night, converting an assist from junior Paige Paratore to narrow the visitor's advantage to one. Dunphey, Kopyta and junior Joanna Reilly each contributed a score during the streak, but Alex Condon's goal at the 1:53 mark secured the win for the Quakers.
Penn opened with two goals to start the game before senior captain Amanda Turturro found the back of the cage to make it 2-1 at the 22:56 mark in the first half. Dunphey then contributed her first goal of the evening to tie it, 2-2.
Both squads would trade scores as the period went on before Scott converted a free-position attempt to make it 5-5 with 1:10 remaining. Back-to-back goals from the Quakers closed out the half with Penn leading, 7-5.
RU hits the road Saturday to face Drexel at 1 p.m. The Dragons will carry a live stream of the match.
