PISCATAWAY, N.J.- Rutgers women's lacrosse earned its third straight win as it defeated Manhattan, 15-5, in a snow-shortened matchup Wednesday afternoon at High Point Solutions Stadium. Senior Kristina Dunphey collected six points (5g, 1a), including her 100th-career point, and Alana Navaroli produced a single-game Scarlet Knight record with 12 draw controls to help RU secure the victory over the Jaspers.
With 8:30 remaining in the second half, the game ended due to inclement weather. With the win, Rutgers moves to 5-3 on the season heading into Big Ten play Saturday against Penn State. Dunphey led the way offensively for the Scarlet Knights with a season-high five goals, while Joanna Reilly, Nicole Kopyta and Sydney Quinn each found the back of the net twice. Kopyta has now scored multiple goals in each of RU's first eight games.
"The conditions out here today were not ideal, but we were able to pull together a solid performance," said head coach Laura Brand-Sias. "This was a great team win."
Manhattan opened with the first goal of the game, as Darby Nolan converted on a free position attempt at the 28:35 mark. But Rutgers answered with six straight goals, including two each from Dunphey and Kopyta. An unassisted strike from sophomore Abbey Brooks put the Scarlet Knights up, 6-1, with 14:54 in the first period.
After a Jasper goal, Dunphey responded with her third and fourth goals of the half, as she put one between the pipes on a free position attempt with 2:21 left in the first. With just seconds left in the opening half, Brooks found Reilly to put RU ahead, 9-2, at halftime.
From there, Rutgers outscored Manhattan 6-3 in the second half, which included a 5-0 scoring run down the stretch. Quinn recorded two goals, as her second of the afternoon made it 14-4 in favor of Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights return to action on Saturday, March 18, when it competes against No. 9 Penn State at 1 p.m. in University Park, Pennsylvania.
