Softball Defeated by No. 25 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Rutgers softball team was defeated by No. 25 Ohio State by a score of 12-1 in five innings on Sunday afternoon at Buckeye Field.
The Buckeyes swept the series with the Scarlet Knights to remain undefeated in Big Ten action.
Juniors Sierra Maddox and Rebecca Hall posted two hits each in the contest to lead RU (9-24, 1-5 Big Ten), while freshman Taryn Atlee added a triple. Senior Shayla Sweeney (8-9) suffered the loss in the circle.
OSU (22-7, 6-0 Big Ten) was led by Alex Bayne with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including a home run, three runs and two RBIs. The Big Ten Player of the Week, Lilli Piper, also added in a home run and two RBIs in the win. Shelby McCombs earned the victory to improve to 3-0 in the circle.
Ohio State used four runs on five hits to take an early lead in the first inning.
Base hits for Maddox and senior Bridget Carr helped load the bases for the Scarlet Knights in the top of the second. However, the Buckeyes allowed no runs to cross.
OSU then led off the bottom of the inning with back-to-back home runs for Bayne and Piper. The Buckeyes would tack on two more runs on a double for McCombs to set their advantage at 8-0.
After Atlee led off the third inning with a triple, freshman Nicole Bowman would reach on a fielder's choice to help Atlee cross home and cut into the deficit, 8-1.
However, the Buckeyes pushed their lead to 12-1 with a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings for the game's final margin.
UP NEXT
Wrapping up a slate of 34 consecutive games on the road, Rutgers travels to Seton Hall for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, April 5. The Scarlet Knights then host Nebraska for their home opener on Friday, April 7 to start a three-game series.

- Today's contest marked RU's 33rd consecutive game on the road to open the season.
- Rebecca Hall added in her 12th multi-hit game of the year, while Sierra Maddox added in her fourth multi-hit contest.
- Taryn Atlee posted the third triple of her career. Atlee is on a seven-game reached base streak.
- Shayla Sweeney has started 20 games for the Scarlet Knights this season and has pitched a team-high 103.2 innings.
