Apr 21 | Softball
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - In a game that saw four lead changes, the Rutgers softball team fell short in extra innings to Penn State by a score of 11-9 on Friday night at Beard Field.
RU (11-30, 2-11 Big Ten) opened the contest with a 5-0 lead before PSU (19-25, 5-10 Big Ten) moved ahead with 6-5 by the third. The Scarlet Knights went on to reclaim the advantage with a four-run fifth inning. However, the Nittany Lions tied up the contest in the sixth and went on to add two more in the eighth to edge out the win.
Junior Rebecca Hall added a career-best six RBIs on two hits. Freshmen Taryn Atlee and Hailey Hoklotubbe also contributed two hits each. Senior Aubrie Levine suffered the loss for RU.
Penn State was led by Tori Dubois with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, including a home run. Madison Seifert earned the win for the Nittany Lions.
Rutgers jumped to a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first and three runs in the second. After three Scarlet Knight hits loaded the bases in the top of the second, Hall knocked a triple to right field to send in all three runs for a 5-0 RU lead.
The Nittany Lions countered with four runs in the second and two in the third to inch into the lead, 6-5.
After sophomore Whitney Jones registered a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fourth, Rutgers reclaimed the lead with four runs in the top of the fifth. Classmate Nicolette Anico led off with a hit, going on to score on an error. With the bases loaded and two outs, senior Carly Todd drew a walk to send in the leading run. Hall then followed with a two-RBI single to set the advantage at 9-6.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Nittany Lions tied the game, 9-9, with three runs on three hits and an RU error. Levine who had entered the circle with two runners on and one out, retired two of three batters faced at the plate to end the inning with the score knotted.
Although Rutgers stranded a runner on in the seventh, Levine would register a 1-2-3 frame, including her fifth consecutive batter retired at the plate, to send the game into extras.
However, PSU's Dubois went on to register a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning for the win.
