Team Canada Takes Seventh Place
TAIPEI CITY, TAIWAN – Mael Gilles and the Canadian Development Women's National Team finished in seventh place the 29th Summer Universiade.
After falling to Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals, Team Canada moved on to the classification round where they dropped a 80-75 decision to the United States before defeating the Czech Republic on Monday morning for the seventh place finish.
The incoming Scarlet Knight added a tournament-high nine points going 4-of-8 from the field from off the bench against Team USA. A slow start for Canada had them trailing the United States 26-16 at the end of the first quarter. However, the team found their stride in the second quarter, outscoring the Americans 25-20 to reduce the deficit to just five heading into halftime. The Canadians continued their strong play in the third quarter and entered the final frame with a one point advantage, leading 58-57. But the lead slipped away in the fourth as the United States outscored Canada 23-17 on their way to victory.
Gilles closed out tournament play with five points and six boards in just under 15 minutes of action against the Czech Republic. Canada trailed Czech Republic 18-17 after a tight first quarter but fought back to take a 36-30 lead at the half. Canada would maintain their lead and pulled away in the second half en route to a 16-point win.
