Rowing Completes Coaching Staff

Head coach Justin Price names assistant coaches and director of operations
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers head women's rowing coach Justin Price announced the hiring of three assistant coaches and a director of operations to his staff. Chuck Rodosky, Julia Vari and Marci Robles will assist Price, while Matt Fishman was named the program's director of operations.
"In putting together this staff, it was important to find really good coaches that fit our program," said Price. "I am thrilled with the team we have assembled as I know that each member of our staff will be able to bring their unique skills and talents to the fore to help lead our team toward great things."
Rodosky most recently completed his second season as an assistant coach and recruiting director at Duke. Prior to joining the Blue Devils staff, he spent six years as an assistant at Ohio State. During his initial campaign at Duke in 2015-16, he took the Blue Devils to their first NCAA Championships appearance, as well as a second-place finish at the ACC Championship. For his efforts, he was part of the Duke coaching staff that received Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National and Region 3 Staff of the Year accolades.
Rodosky oversaw the 2V8 in 2016 as it won the C Final at the NCAA Championships. The crew also took second at the ACC Championship Grand Final. His role with the 2V8 allowed Duke to be ranked 16th by the CRCA in the final poll. The Blue Devils appeared in the ledger five times, tied for the most in a year in program history.
While at Ohio State, Rodosky worked primarily with the first and second N8 crews as well as the V4. Rodosky capped his Buckeye career with his third consecutive NCAA title as Ohio State became the first team in NCAA history to win three-straight national championships in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The Buckeyes claimed an individual national title in the V8, a runner-up finish in the 2V8 and fifth place in the V4. During his time at Ohio State, the Buckeyes captured four Big Ten Championships, topping the conference field in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Prior to his role with Ohio State, Rodosky served as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Iowa women's rowing program (2006-10). Rodosky guided the Hawkeye first N8 to a third-place finish at the 2007 Big Ten Championships and the second N8 to a third-place finish at the 2008 Big Ten Championships. Rodosky made significant strides in recruiting, producing three N8 crews. He also advanced several novice athletes onto the varsity team each year to race at the Aramark South/Central Region Sprints.
Rodosky participated in the 2000 NYAC U.S. Development Camp as well as the 2001 Nereid U.S. Development Camp. He also holds USRowing Level III coaching certification. A rower (1995-99) and team captain (1997-99) at Bowling Green State University, Rodosky earned his bachelor's degree in accounting in 1999.
"Chuck brings valuable experience to our staff and has accomplished great things everywhere he has been," said Price. "He knows what it takes to produce at a high level and has done it repeatedly throughout his career. I am very excited to have Chuck on board and look forward to having him working with our student-athletes."
Vari joins the Rutgers coaching staff after spending the 2016-17 season at Loyola Marymount with Price. While at LMU, the Lions finished third at the West Coast Conference Championship in a seven-team field and the program also earned a pair selections to the WCC All-Conference teams.
Vari began her collegiate coaching career at her alma mater Ohio State where she was a member of the coaching staffs that won the NCAA Championship in 2015 and back-to-back Big Ten Conference Championships in 2015 and 2016. In 2016, she helped lead the V4 and 3V4 to first-place finishes at the Big Ten Championship. In her first year on the Ohio State coaching staff, Vari coached the 3V4 to victory at the 2015 Big Ten Championship.
In addition to coaching at the collegiate level, Vari also spent the summers of 2014 and 2015 as an assistant coach with the Princeton National Rowing Association (PNRA). While working at PNRA, she coached the PNRA/Mercer Junior Rowing Club to back-to-back victories in the Under 17 8+ at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta in 2014 and 2015. Vari also worked with the "Adult Learn to Scull" program in 2015, and led the "Novice Learn to Row" program in 2014.
Prior to beginning her coaching career, Vari rowed collegiately at Ohio State and was a member of the Buckeye team that won both the Big Ten and the NCAA Championship in 2013. Vari graduated cum laude from Ohio State with a Bachelor of Science in Education, Sport Industry.
"I have had the pleasure of working with Julia previously and have gotten to see her attitude, work ethic and skills on display firsthand," said Price. "She is extremely diligent in everything that she does, enthusiastic about her work and a team player in every sense. We are lucky to have her with us at Rutgers."
Robles arrives at Rutgers after serving three years as the head men's rowing coach at Jacksonville University. Before joining the Dolphins staff, Robles spent five seasons with stints at Gonzaga and Georgetown.
At Jacksonville, Robles led the men's program to its first MAAC Championship win in her first year as head coach. The following year, she took a Varsity 4 to the IRA National Championship where that crew finished 18th, matching the program's best finish in that event. Under her leadership, the program expanded domestic and international recruiting efforts, improved the team GPA each semester over the last two years, and increased its involvement in community service.
While at Gonzaga, Robles served three seasons as the women's rowing assistant coach/recruiting coordinator where she helped guide the program to a 2013 West Coast Conference Championship and inaugural bid to the NCAA Championship. That year, her Varsity 4 won gold at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association, finished 2nd at the West Coast Conference Championships, and placed 16th in the nation at the NCAA Championship. Under her coaching, the Bulldogs also claimed first in the V4 at the WCC Championship as well as at the WIRA Championship in 2012.
Prior to Gonzaga, she spent two seasons at Georgetown serving as an assistant coach on the Hoyas rowing staff during the 2009-10 season and earning a promotion to varsity lightweight assistant coach in July of 2010. During her time at Georgetown, her crews placed in the top three both at the Big East Championship and at Eastern Sprints.
Prior to Georgetown, Robles spent time at National Cathedral School in Washington, D.C., as the freshman coach.
Most recently, Robles spent six weeks as an assistant coach at the Oklahoma City High Performance Center, where she helped coach crews to 5 first place finishes at the 2017 Club National Championships.
Robles was a four-year coxswain on the men's rowing team at Boston College and served as the team's president her senior year. She went on to become a member of the Thompson's Boat Center from 2006-07 as well as Riverside Boat Club from 2008-09.
Robles graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in art history and theology from Boston College in 2006 and earned a Certificate in Museum Studies from Tufts University in 2009. She is also a graduate of the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy.
"Marci is a passionate, detail-oriented coach who will provide great energy," said Price. "Marci is a tireless worker, has high standards, and is committed to the mission of the team. I love her experience and background, but more importantly I love her desire to make an impact at Rutgers and her desire to be great."
Fishman is in his first season as director of operations for the rowing program. In his role at Rutgers, Fishman will offer support to rowing as well as the women's volleyball team and Rutgers Leadership Academy. Prior to taking on an operations role, Fishman enjoyed an accomplished career as a volleyball coach at the collegiate, high school and club levels.
He most recently served as an assistant coach at Indiana University-Kokomo, Carmel High School and Indiana University-Bloomington. Fishman also had a successful volleyball career as a four-year setter for the Bowling Green State University Division I AA Men's Team.
"Matt has been great and has jumped right in to make sure we have everything we need to compete at a high level," said Price. "He takes a great deal of pride in everything that he does and will certainly help make our program better."
Price will open his first season as head coach of the Rutgers women's program.
