MANHATTAN, KS – Co-captain Ashleigh Greenham shot a school record and tournament-tying record 66 in the second round of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational, played Monday at the Colbert Hills Golf Course. The redshirt junior's six-under par performance helped the Scarlet Knights tie the school record with a 287, moving RU into second place with a 596 (309-287) entering Tuesday's final round.
"It was an exciting day for us on the course," said head coach Kari Williams. "We were initially delayed by storms this morning, but our team was ready to compete. It was fun to watch Ash capitalize on her strong play from the fairways, rolling in several challenging putts for birdie. Tatum also played hard today and really brought her game together. Our team's performance shot us up the leaderboard and we are all looking forward to finishing strong."
Greenham's 66 bested the previous school record of 67, shot by fellow co-captain Emily Mills at the 2016 Big Ten Championship. Playing in first position, Greenham is third in the 51-player field with an even par 144 (78-66). She is an event best five-under on par five holes and one-under on par threes to compile a tournament-best 12 birdies.
"It was a really fun day of golf," said Greenham. "As a team, we came out with a goal of playing more aggressively and I stuck to that game plan. I was able to string together a run of birdies after my putter got hot. It's been quite a while since I've had a round where my game came together like this, and I'm really happy with how my hard work has paid off."
Senior Tatum Jackson also made a major impact on Tuesday, shooting a one-under 71 to enter the final 18 holes tied for seventh with a 148 (77-71). She is minus one on par threes, with seven birdies and 21 pars.
"I hit the ball well off the tee and was able to put myself in good positions around the course," said Jackson. "That led to a lot of birdie opportunities and I was able to take advantage of those holes. As a team, we made a huge leap up the leaderboard and we're all excited about the final round."
Senior Emily Mills turned in another strong showing on day two, and is tied for 13th with a 150 (76-74). She has six birdies and 21 pars.
"I was so happy to see our team play well today," said Mills. "To have that feeling after our round and share that together is something we haven't experienced in my four years. This represents the talent we have on our team."
Sophomore Carrie-Ann Lee and freshman Harriet Allsebrook complete the team scorecard. Lee is tied for 25th with a 154 (78-76), while Allsebrook is tied for 36th with a 157 (79-78).
Collectively the Scarlet Knights have counted a tournament-best 31 birdies on the par 72, 6,235-yard course.
Host Kansas State leads the field with a 583 (287-296) on its home course, 13 strokes ahead of the Scarlet Knights. The Wildcats boast the top two competitors entering the final round, including Connie Jaffrey, who is atop the leaderboard with a six-under 138 (66-72).
Rutgers is ahead of Kansas, Tulsa, Arkansas State, Central Arkansas, Georgia Southern, North Texas and Arkansas-Little Rock with 18 holes to play.
The final round tees-off via a shotgun start at 8 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Live scoring is available via Golfstat.
