Softball Finalizes 2017-18 Roster

Scarlet Knights welcome Silinonte and Sosa
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers softball finalizes its 2017-18 roster with newcomers Alexis Silinonte and Ashley Sosa, head coach Jay Nelson announced. The two new additions round out a nine-person freshmen class.
"The first week of practice has shown this team is bringing a brand new high energy into their mainstream way of doing business on the field," said Nelson. "With the addition of nine freshmen, a youth movement is under way and it has brought with it an exciting new attitude to the program. I'm excited to watch them compete this fall and encouraged by their great team attitude."

Notes: Four-year varsity starter for Petaluma High School (2014-17)…finished her career with a .418 BA, .526 OBP, .553 SLG, 1.080 OPS…three-time Sonoma County League Champion (2014-16)… named Sonoma County League First Team All-League in junior and senior seasons (2016, 2017)…added to the 2016 Large School All-Empire Second Team …three-time Buffalo Wild Wings Player of the Week in her junior season…an Honor Roll student…NCOA (ASA) Umpire, blue medal, which is achieved for serving five years as an umpire… member of the Bownet 18U Banister from 2015-17…member and team captain of Future Prospects/Bownet 18U Team from 2015-2016…daughter of Joseph and Stephanie Silinonte…has one sister, Kelsea Silinonte…father is a retired NYPD Detective…cousin, Frank Coscia, plays hockey at Stony Brook University…interested in political science and criminal justice.
Nelson on Silinonte: "Alexis is another freshman with a great attitude and willing to do what it takes to help this team win in the Big Ten. She is a talented outfielder who will give us depth in the outfield as she competes for a starting position. In addition to competing for a spot in the lineup, she catches bull pen sessions for our for our pitchers."

Notes: Four year varsity starter and three-time captain for Teaneck High School… four time All-National League selection (2013-2017)...two-time Second Team All-Bergen County selection (2016 and 2017) …broke the school record for most career hits with 154 in 2017…in 2016, finished the season with a team-leading .531 batting average and 33 stolen bases in 27 games, earning Most Valuable Player…batted .521 with seven homeruns in 2015 to earn Offensive Player of the Year on team…member of the Teaneck High School Theatre Department (2015-2017), acting in four productions and winning Most Outstanding Performance in a play (2017)… Principal's Honor Roll (2013-2017)... member of the National Honors Society and Peer Leadership program for mentoring freshmen…most recently, a member of the Jersey Inferno-Meister 18U (2015-2017)…daughter of Vicente and Doris Sosa…has a sister, Jennifer, and a brother, Miguel…interested in marketing.
Nelson on Sosa: "Ashley comes to us from up the road at Teaneck. She is a hard working outfielder that will add speed and depth to the group. She will give us some versatility and when not starting we can use her to pinch run increasing our ability to score runs. She has a great attitude and will challenge for a starting role in the spring."
