Wrestling Rankings Update: Week 1

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Coming off its 3-0 weekend to open the season, Rutgers wrestling checks in at No. 15 in the first NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll, released on Tuesday. In their first action of 2018-19, the Scarlet Knights swept Centenary (48-3), Fresno State (30-6) and Johnson & Wales (38-5) on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the RAC.
As a team, RU is also ranked No. 14/16 (dual/tournament) by Intermat, No. 14 by FloWrestling and No. 14 by TrackWrestling.
Eleven Big Ten programs appear in the first coaches poll of the regular season, including four teams – No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Iowa and No. 5 Michigan – in the Top 5. Seven teams in the Top 25 – No. 3 Iowa, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Michigan, No. 12 Nebraska, No. 13 Minnesota, No. 17 Purdue and No. 18 Wisconsin – appear on this season's schedule.
Five individuals appear in the national rankings for Rutgers, including freshman Stephan Glasgow (165), who is ranked No. 20 by The Open Mat and No. 23 by TrackWrestling for the first rankings of his career. In his collegiate debut last Saturday, Glasgow produced three wins, including a pin against Centenary, a major decision against Johnson & Wales and a 3-2 decision against Fresno State's Brandon Martino.
The Scarlet Knights have two wrestlers ranked within the Top-3 of their weight classes. Junior Nick Suriano is No. 2 by FloWrestling and No. 3 by Intermat, AWN and TrackWrestling at 133 pounds. Graduate senior Anthony Ashnault is No. 2 by Intermat and No. 3 by FloWrestling, The Open Mat and TrackWrestling. Both went 3-0 during Saturday's quad meet, combining for five pins and 34 team points.
Graduate seniors John Van Brill (157) and Nicholas Gravina (184) also appear in the national polls, with Van Brill as high as No. 7 (The Open Mat) and Gravina as high as No. 12 (FloWrestling, TrackWrestling). Van Brill collected two wins last Saturday while Gravina did not see action.
