
Wrestling Adds NCAA Qualifiers Daniel Herrera and Brett Ungar

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers wrestling announced the additions of NCAA qualifiers Daniel Herrera (Iowa State) and Brett Ungar (Cornell) to its roster. Ungar was a two-time NCAA qualifier at 133 pounds for the Big Red, while Herrera arrives "On the Banks" after qualifying in 2025 at heavyweight for the Cyclones.
Herrera, who redshirted this past season, went 24-15 during his 2024-25 campaign. He finished fifth at the Big 12 Tournament to advance to the 2025 NCAA Championships in Philadelphia. Herrera produced eight dual victories for the Cyclones along with nine pins, five tech falls and a major decision.
A native of Indio, California, Herrera competed at Palm Desert High School before finishing his high school career at Ames High School in Iowa. Herrera was a three-time state champion (two in California, one in Iowa), finishing his scholastic career with a perfect 87-0 record. Herrera was high school teammates with current Scarlet Knight Andrew Barbosa at Palm Desert.
Ungar wrestled for the Big Red from 2022-26, producing 52 victories during his time in Ithaca. Ungar qualified for back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2023 and 2024, advancing to the Round of 12 as a true freshman at the 2023 NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Ungar produced back-to-back 20-win seasons in 2023 and 2024 and was an EIWA runner-up in 2022-23.
A native of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Ungar produced a 143-5 scholastic record and state titles in both New Jersey (Hunterdon Central) and Pennsylvania (Notre Dame Green Pond). Ungar went 60-3 in his final two seasons at Notre Dame Green Pond, capturing a PIAA state championship at 120 pounds during his senior season. Ungar also earned an NJSIAA state title as a sophomore at Hunterdon Central.
Rutgers finished No. 11 in the final NWCA Coaches Poll for the second consecutive year in 2025-26. The Scarlet Knights closed the regular season on a six-match winning streak, which included the program's first-ever win over then-No. 6 Minnesota to help RU to its best regular-season Big Ten finish ever. Rutgers secured nine NCAA qualifiers, its most since 2016, under 19-year head coach Scott Goodale.
